Abstract

In traditional financial markets, long-term buying of deep out-of-the-money (OTM) Puts is often considered a typical "black swan insurance" strategy: continuously losing premiums during normal times, only to recoup losses or even make a large profit in a single instance of extreme risk. The question is, does this logic still hold true in the more volatile and frequently crashing crypto market?

This backtest provides a more complex answer. Based on historical data from January 1, 2018 to March 14, 2026, we conducted a systematic test on BTC and ETH: purchasing one deep OTM Put each month and holding it until maturity without market timing. The results show that this is not a "stable profit" strategy, but rather an extremely right-skewed, extremely low-win-rate, and highly path-dependent tail insurance tool. Under the benchmark portfolio, BTC's final total return was 97.62%, while ETH's was -73.07%; that is, the same logic can yield completely opposite long-term results on different assets.

"Long-term insurance" has always been one of the most controversial strategies. Supporters argue that what truly determines the fate of long-term funds is not daily volatility, but rather a few systemic crashes; opponents, on the other hand, believe that paying premiums year after year is essentially gambling on uncertain disasters with certain losses.

The crypto market makes this debate even more interesting. On one hand, the volatility of BTC and ETH is far higher than that of traditional assets, and crashes are not uncommon; on the other hand, extreme market conditions occur more frequently, theoretically making tail hedging more suitable for survival. So far in 2026, cryptocurrencies have shown only a moderate correlation with the S&P 500 and gold, perhaps a signal that asset classes are finally beginning to decouple.

Looking at crypto funds individually, it was observed that inflows were mainly in Bitcoin.

Bitcoin saw inflows worth $793.4 million, while Ethereum (ETH) experienced inflows of $315.3 million.

Looking at other altcoins, $XRP experienced an outflow of $76.1 million, while Solana (SOL) saw an inflow of $9.1 million, Sui (SUI) $3.1 million, and Chainlink (LINK) $2.7 million.

This is approaching the $3.0 billion in outflows seen in the previous five-week period.
