Ethereum traded near $2,379 on the daily $ETH/USD chart shared by More Crypto Online, while price moved above the descending orange trendline that had capped $ETH since the previous high area.

The chart shows $ETH recovering from the lower support zone near $1,600 to $1,821, where the move formed a larger corrective base. From that area, Ethereum built a rising structure marked as an A-B-C move, with price now testing the upper part of that recovery.

The analyst said the 100% extension target for wave (c) sits near $2,650. On the chart, this level appears at $2,657, which stands above the current price and inside the first marked upside target zone.

The breakout above the trendline matters because $ETH had failed several times near that same descending resistance. A daily move above it could confirm that buyers have gained short-term control after weeks of sideways and upward price action.

However, $ETH still needs to clear the next resistance area between $2,617 and $2,957. The chart marks this zone with Fibonacci levels, including the 38.2% retracement at $2,617 and the 50% retracement near $2,958.

Bitcoin Price Rockets Past $81,000 for the First Time Since January
Bitcoin price surged above $81,000 for the first time since January 2026.Bitcoin price broke above $81,000 during Asian trading hours and early U.S. hours today, its highest price since late January and the latest sign that the market has moved past a brutal first-quarter stretch that bottomed near $60,000. 

The move came on the back of several forces hitting at once: a flood of institutional money into ETFs, a shift in Middle East tensions, and a derivatives market that had been loading up for a run past $80,000 for weeks.

The structural setup for this was built in April. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs pulled in $2.44 billion in net inflows last month — the strongest monthly figure since October 2025, when Bitcoin price hit its $126,000 all-time high. BlackRock’s IBIT alone captured $1.71 billion of that total, a 70% market share that keeps widening the gap between the fund and every other ETF in the space. 

Strategy, the Michael Saylor-led firm, also confirmed several massive Bitcoin purchases in April, bringing its total holdings to 818,334 BTC.

The geopolitical backdrop did the rest of the work. Iran has allegedly been charging oil tankers $1 per barrel in Bitcoin to pass through the Strait of Hormuz since mid-March, a toll the country chose in crypto because the funds are harder to freeze under sanctions. A single loaded supertanker carrying two million barrels generates a $2 million transit fee, all settled on-chain.

Bitcoin [$BTC] reclaimed the $80,000 level for the first time since the 31st of January as whale accumulation accelerated, with 4,527 $BTC worth about $362 million absorbed within 24 hours. This surge reflected strong conviction from large holders who removed supply from circulation rather than distributing.

As a result, available liquidity across exchanges appeared constrained, reinforcing a tightening supply environment for Bitcoin. In addition, sustained whale accumulation often signaled early positioning ahead of broader market expansion. This behavior suggested that large players anticipated higher valuations despite recent volatility.

While retail demand remained uneven, the scale of this absorption created a structural base that could support continued upside if demand conditions strengthened further.

Why did inflows spike despite outflows?

Spot Netflow data showed a $98.05 million inflow on the 5th of May, introducing fresh exchange supply even as the broader trend leaned toward outflows. This contrast revealed a short-term shift in positioning, where some holders moved coins to exchanges while others continued withdrawing.

As a result, localized sell pressure emerged despite the underlying accumulation narrative. In addition, such inflow spikes often aligned with profit-taking or tactical repositioning rather than sustained distribution.

Therefore, the market reflected a mixed but transitional structure, where supply entered exchanges temporarily while longer-term holders reduced exposure to selling venues. This dynamic suggested that underlying strength remained intact despite short-lived fluctuations in exchange balances.

Bitcoin price catalysts this week

The options market tells a story of traders who saw this coming. Nomura’s Laser Digital flagged in a Tuesday research note that desks had built cheap upside call ratio structures over the past several weeks, and that a sustained break above $80,000 would flip Bitcoin’s risk reversal indicator from negative to positive.

On Deribit, the single largest open interest position across all options contracts is an $80,000 strike call expiring May 29, with 7,493.7 $BTC behind it. Calls hold 58.69% of total options open interest versus 41.31% for puts, though near-term put volume has picked up as traders hedge the tail risk.

Two catalysts this week could push Bitcoin price in either direction. Strategy’s earnings release today will give the market its first look at how the company accounts for Bitcoin at current prices, while Friday’s nonfarm payrolls report will shape expectations for Federal Reserve policy through the summer.

Bitcoin price is up 6.2% on the week, currently trading at $81,035.
