Long liquidations accelerate market deleveraging

The broader market had already weakened after losing more than $300 billion in value during late May. As prices slipped through key levels, leveraged positions began unraveling across major exchanges.

Over the past 24 hours as of press time, liquidations reached $282.08 million. Notably, longs accounted for $157.85 million, exceeding the $124.23 million wiped from shorts.

This imbalance suggests bullish traders absorbed the largest shock as momentum reversed.

Tom, the founder of OpenFind, has drawn attention to a research paper co-authored by the Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, in which they highlighted XRP. Specifically, the paper discussed cross-border payments and how crypto assets such as XRP could serve as a bridge currency. Fed Chairman’s Research Paper Highlights XRP’s UtilityIn an X post, Tom mentioned that the new Fed chairman co-authored a paper naming XRP as a liquidity solution between stablecoins. He further mentioned that the paper clearly states that private sector infrastructure should not be ruled out in future digital money systems. The OpenFind founder noted that this is proof that private infrastructure providers like Ripple are becoming critical components of the financial system.

The 2022 paper discussed the possibility of a Special Drawing Rights-based stablecoin that can be exchanged for any national currency. The paper noted that such an arrangement could resemble the cross-border payments system that Ripple operates using XRP. Notably, the altcoin serves as the bridge currency in Ripple’s cross-border payments service, allowing customers to swap the crypto asset for their desired currency. Former Ripple CTO David Schwartz had previously commented on its role as a bridge currency, noting that it has more advantages over stablecoins since there isn’t one consensus stablecoin to settle these transactions in. Meanwhile, it is worth noting that the new Fed chair is pro-crypto and had disclosed his crypto exposure prior to his nomination hearing. Institutions were never going to arrive in crypto the way crypto wanted them to. No stampede into governance tokens. No CFO proudly announcing that idle treasury had been rotated into volatile assets. No pension fund committee suddenly speaking fluent DeFi. That was always the fantasy version.The real version is less theatrical and far more important. Institutions will not buy crypto as a belief system. They will instead use it as infrastructure.Not because banks cannot copy the code. They can. But because they cannot copy the jungle that made the code useful: the speed, failure, pressure, and live-market iteration that web3 has been refining in public for years.
The Code Was Never the Moat
That is the part the institutional crypto debate keeps missing. The advantage of web3 is not that banks are technically incapable of building blockchain infrastructure. Many are perfectly capable. They have capital, engineers, consultants, vendors, internal innovation labs, and enough strategy decks to pave a road from Canary Wharf to Singapore.A bank can spin up a chain. For example, BlackRock’s BUIDL and DTCC’s tokenization service show that the institutional response is not to recreate crypto as a belief system, but to adopt tokenization as infrastructure. It can fork an execution environment. It can wrap the whole thing in compliance language, add permissioning, bring in a vendor, and present it six months later under soft blue lighting at a financial infrastructure conference. But infrastructure is not only what gets built.Crypto’s real moat is not decentralisation. It is iteration velocity under pressure. The industry tests financial ideas in the wild, often brutally, sometimes embarrassingly, but quickly. Products launch, break, fork, attract liquidity, lose liquidity, get arbitraged, get exploited, get rebuilt, and then get copied by someone with a
