A Kentucky school district has secured nearly $27 million in settlements from major social media companies over allegations that their platforms contributed to a growing student mental health crisis. The financial details, revealed through public records obtained by Reuters, mark one of the most closely watched outcomes in the ongoing wave of social media addiction lawsuits across the United States.Breathitt County School District reached a $9 million settlement with Meta Platforms on May 21, just weeks before a scheduled June trial. The agreement followed earlier settlements with other defendants, including Snap Inc., Alphabet’s YouTube, and ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok. According to settlement documents, Snap agreed to pay $8 million, ByteDance contributed $8 million, and Alphabet paid approximately $2.01 million.The social media companies denied the allegations and maintain that they have implemented significant safety measures to protect teenagers and younger users on their platforms. Despite rejecting claims of wrongdoing, the companies chose to resolve the dispute before trial.The lawsuit accused the companies of designing addictive social media platforms that encouraged excessive use among young people, contributing to anxiety, depression, self-harm, and other mental health challenges. The district argued that schools have been forced to bear the burden of addressing these issues through increased counseling, intervention programs, and staff resources.Originally, Breathitt County School District sought more than $60 million in damages to fund a 15-year student mental health initiative and recover costs associated with managing the impact of social media. Notably, CryptoQuant data also shows that whale activity, or wallets holding between 1,000 and 10,000 BTC, has been declining at one of the fastest rates this year.
The pattern mirrors previous bear market phases, particularly 2022, when large holders shifted from accumulation to distribution as
market momentum faded. Moreover, smaller institutional-like holders, often referred to as
"dolphins" (100-1,000 BTC), have also seen a sharp slowdown in growth. After peaking at approximately +970,000 BTC in October 2025, their accumulation trend has now fallen significantly below historical averages.

Texas has moved closer to holding Bitcoin directly after naming a new advisory committee to guide the state’s Strategic Bitcoin Reserve.



Summary


Texas has named a five-member advisory committee to guide the management, custody, and valuation of its Strategic Bitcoin Reserve.



The state is seeking a qualified crypto custodian as it prepares to move from IBIT-based exposure to directly held Bitcoin.



The reserve currently holds about $10 million in Bitcoin exposure through BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust.



The Texas Comptroller’s office said Thursday that Acting Comptroller Kelly Hancock will serve on the five-member Texas Strategic Bitcoin Reserve Advisory Committee, which will advise the state on custody, valuation, and management of Bitcoin holdings.



The committee was created under Senate Bill 21, which the 89th Texas Legislature passed and signed into law on June 22, 2025. The law gave the Comptroller’s office authority to administer the reserve and set up a framework for state-level Bitcoin exposure.



Hancock said in a statement that lawmakers gave his office a clear duty to manage the reserve with transparency, security, and strong financial controls. He added that the committee brings the expertise needed to carry out that work carefully and in the interest of Texas taxpayers.
