1. What Is Obol?

Obol is an Ethereum ecosystem infrastructure protocol that utilizes Distributed Validator Technology (DVT) to allow multiple independent nodes to jointly operate a single validator node, thereby improving slashing resistance, security, and availability. Compared to traditional single-point validators, Obol's technology significantly reduces centralization risks and hardware barriers, making it suitable for both institutional and individual stakers. The product has been deployed on Ethereum and Gnosis, and has expanded to Monad. Its DVT technology can also be applied to sequencers and restaking services, with the goal of becoming a core component of modular block production. It is a direct competitor to SSV Network.

2. How Does Obol Work?

The core components of Obol include:

Charon: A middleware client used to synchronize consensus and state across multiple nodes.

DV Launchpad / Obol SDK / Node Launcher: Tools used for the rapid deployment and management of distributed validators.

Obol Splits: Used for the management of reward splitting.

The DVT supported by Obol utilizes secret sharing and consensus signing mechanisms to achieve tamper-proof, penalty-resistant, and multi-party controlled secure validator operations. It has been adopted by leading staking platforms such as Lido and EtherFi, and is used in native block sequencing and restaking mechanisms.

3. Who Founded Obol?

Obol Labs consists of over 35 full-time members, with core members possessing deep experience in Web3 and infrastructure:

Collin Myers (CEO): Former Head of DeFi Product at ConsenSys, Global BD at Token Foundry, and Co-founder of the Web3 fund Olena Capital.

Oisin Kyne (CTO): Former Full-stack Engineer at ConsenSys, expert in Ethereum software architecture, and Director of Kyne Software.

2021.09 (Seed Round): $4M raised (at a $50M valuation), led by Ethereal Ventures, with participation from Coinbase, Delphi, Figment, and others.
