Zcash has hit a new all-time high.
This privacy coin launched in 2016 uses zero-knowledge proof technology to completely hide transaction amounts and participants. ZEC recently broke through $800, with its market capitalization standing at over $13 billion, returning to the top 11 globally.
24-hour trading volume once approached $3.9 billion, accounting for a quarter of its market cap. This isn't a pump in a low-liquidity environment; it's genuine, institutional-level turnover.
What makes this truly surreal, however, isn't the price surge. It's who's buying.
Grayscale Investments has submitted its 5th amendment to the SEC for converting its Zcash Trust into an ETF. The custodian is Coinbase Custody, the transfer agent is Bank of New York Mellon, and the list of authorized participants includes Jane Street Capital and Virtu Americas.
The most core compliance institutions on Wall Street are collectively building infrastructure for an "invisible currency."
This might be the most paradoxical scene in financial history: An asset designed to make everyone invisible now needs to be visible to everyone to gain pricing power.
Pricing "invisibility" with the most transparent tool.
Grayscale's trust has been trading on the OTC market since 2017, but the lack of an arbitrage mechanism caused its price to deviate from NAV long-term, with premiums reaching up to 240% and discounts as deep as 55%. The ETF aims to introduce the arbitrage machine to peg the price back to the spot market.
The reason this has progressed to this point, however, isn't because Wall Street suddenly fell in love with privacy. It's because Zcash, just three months ago, survived a crisis that nearly sent it to zero.
01 、The Surgery That Almost Zeroed It
In late May this year, security researchers, aided by AI tools, discovered a fatal vulnerability buried for four years in Zcash's core cryptographic component.
Simply put: Anyone who knew the principle could create an infinite amount of fake ZEC. And due to Zcash's privacy protection mechanism, the counterfeiting process was completely invisible on-chain.
The shield protecting users also protected the counterfeiters.
After the news broke in early June, ZEC plunged from over $600 to around $300 in 48 hours. The market's first reaction was panic: A decade-old blockchain could be rendered worthless due to one bug.
The development team reacted swiftly. An emergency patch was deployed within days to plug the hole. Then, in less than two months, they completed a major upgrade called Ironwood by late July.
The approach was direct: Freeze the entire old shielded pool that had the problem, containing about 3.66 million ZEC worth roughly $1.7 billion. Then build a brand-new, line-by-line mathematically verified shielded pool.
The smartest design was the "revolving door" between the two pools. Funds from the old pool could transfer out, but the total amount allowed to exit could not exceed the amount that was legitimately deposited into it historically.
This essentially set a trap. If fake coins had indeed been created over the past four years, they would compete with real coins for the same exit. Once the quota was used up, the rest would be worthless.
Conversely, if all funds eventually transferred out smoothly, it would serve as proof to the world: The vulnerability was never exploited.
From discovery to upgrade, it took less than two months. ZEC's price also recovered from around $300, eventually breaking past its pre-crash high.
This crisis response is the real foundation that gave institutions the confidence to bet on ZEC.
02 、Transparent Privacy, Private Transparency
Putting an anonymous asset into an SEC-regulated securities account sounds like a joke. But the reason Zcash has reached the ETF stage lies in its biggest difference from Monero: selective privacy.
Monero forces all transactions to be anonymous by default. Zcash supports two types of addresses simultaneously: Transparent addresses are fully traceable on-chain, just like Bitcoin; Shielded addresses hide everything using zero-knowledge proofs.
The Grayscale ETF's operational mechanism precisely leverages this flexibility.
Investors buy ETF shares with USD. Grayscale purchases ZEC in its transparent state within Coinbase's whitelist system and deposits it into cold wallets. Throughout this closed loop, traditional financial institutions never touch the shielded pool.
Zcash also has a "viewing key" feature. Users of shielded addresses can generate a key and give it to an auditor. The auditor can view the account but gains no control.
In essence, Wall Street isn't buying the privacy feature. It's buying exposure to the price of the scarce commodity called "financial privacy."
The investment thesis is straightforward: In an era where AI and big data surveillance are omnipresent, hardcore financial privacy infrastructure will be revalued. The ETF allows traditional funds, which can't manage private keys themselves, to get a seat at the table.
Supply-side tightening makes the bet more intense. The block reward halving at the end of 2024 has already slashed miners' daily new sell pressure by half. Meanwhile, the official Zashi wallet, launched with a "shielded by default" experience, has lowered the barrier to zero-knowledge proof encrypted transactions to almost zero. A regular user clicks twice, and funds automatically enter the shielded pool.
The result is over 5 million ZEC settled in the shielded pool, about 30% of the circulating supply. The effective liquid supply on exchanges is significantly drained. The Grayscale Trust itself holds about 390,000 ZEC, or 2.3% of the circulating supply.
When 30% of the supply is locked in the shielded pool and a significant chunk of the remaining 70% is held by Grayscale, the amount of ZEC truly available for purchase on the secondary market is far less than the market cap number suggests.
If the ETF is approved, institutional buying demand will directly collide with a severely compressed liquid supply.
03、Doesn't Anyone See a Problem Here?
The most interesting tension lies on the regulatory front.
The EU's Anti-Money Laundering Regulation (AMLR) will fully take effect in July 2027, explicitly prohibiting regulated crypto service providers from holding or servicing any privacy coins.
Across the Atlantic, the U.S. SEC not only concluded its investigation into the Zcash Foundation without bringing any charges but also released a 402-page "Crypto Asset Regulation" proposal, paving a compliance path for various ETFs.
One side bans, the other paves the way. European institutions seeking compliant exposure to privacy assets may have to route through the U.S. in the future. If approved, Grayscale's ETF could become the only legitimate channel for global institutional capital to access privacy assets.
This exclusivity itself is a form of pricing power.
Another detail: Grayscale has pledged to reinvest the entire 2.5% management fee from the ETF's first year into supporting the Zcash ecosystem. An asset manager feeding back into a public chain is unprecedented in traditional finance.
Is it a vote of faith, or a lock-in strategy after deep interest alignment?
More notably, entities under Grayscale's parent company, DCG, are negotiating to directly inject about 200,000 ZEC (worth over $100 million at recent prices) into the ETF post-approval. A major shareholder using its own assets to provide liquidity backing for its own product is both a confidence signal and a way to lock themselves onto the same ship.
But the most fundamental question remains: Is "compliant privacy" still privacy?
ETF investors get the price number, not anonymity. Every buy and sell is monitored by NYSE Arca, with full KYC and AML. Zcash's core zero-knowledge proof encryption is completely bypassed in this channel.
Perhaps what Wall Street wants was never privacy itself. It's betting that: The world's hunger for privacy will only grow.
A cryptographic experiment born to resist financial surveillance has ultimately achieved price discovery through the highest level of certification from the very financial surveillance system.
The best ending for an invisibility cloak is to be seen by everyone.
