Руководитель отдела Европейского центрального банка (ЕЦБ) по развитию цифровому евро Эвелин Уитлокс (Evelien Witlox) призвала ускорить внедрение стейблкоина ЕЦБ, чтобы не остаться позади Китая и Великобритании.

Многие центральные банки достаточно быстро продвигаются в исследовании, тестировании и внедрении собственных цифровых валют (CBDC), посетовала чиновница. Уитлокс не радует отсутствие решения для проведения цифровых платежей, которое бы использовалось на всей территории Евросоюза — 13 из 20 стран еврозоны не имеют государственной системы расчетов, поэтому полагаются на международных платежных провайдеров Visa и Mastercard.

Чтобы решить проблему, в 2021 году ЕЦБ начал исследовать возможности цифрового евро. Однако внедрение CBDC замедляется из-за задержек в изменении законодательства. Перед внедрением государственного стейблкоина Европарламент и Евросовет должны завершить разработку правовой базы. Этот процесс длится почти 17 месяцев, что вызывает обеспокоенность отдела. Уитлокс считает необходимым ускорить процесс, чтобы цифровой евро мог быть доступен для людей и бизнеса.

В отличие от ЕЦБ, некоторые центробанки придерживаются осторожного подхода к запуску собственных цифровых валют. Резервный банк Индии (RBI) опасается, что цифровая рупия может ударить по коммерческим банкам.
