According to GlobalData, venture capitalist investment in blockchain technology in particular soars to $14.8 billion in 2021, up more than 600% from $2.1 billion in 2020, according to Finbold. Venture capital activity is concentrated in North America at US$6.8 billion, followed by Latin America at US$3.4 billion, while Europe ranks third at US$3 billion. Elsewhere, Asia Pacific venture capitalists invested US$1.6 billion in the sector, compared to US$440 million in the Middle East. The banking and payments sector is investing heavily in the blockchain technology industry and blockchain is helping the payments industry manage remittances, central bank digital currencies and asset tokenisation, but it is still a new technology that needs to be fully tested before it can be fully adopted in the payments infrastructure, said payments analyst Chris Dinga. Currently, over 90 central banks are already looking at launching central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) that will be powered by blockchain technology.
