OpenAI Reports $6.7 Billion Revenue with $12.3 Billion Operating Loss: Anthropic Surpasses for the First Time
08/19 10:41
According to Beating AI news, OpenAI's revenue for the second quarter reached $6.7 billion, an 18% increase from $5.7 billion in the first quarter. However, during the same period, its operating loss expanded from $9.3 billion to $12.3 billion, with the loss growth rate significantly outpacing revenue growth. Some investors expressed disappointment with this performance. In contrast, Anthropic reported revenue of $11.6 billion during the same period, more than doubling its first-quarter revenue. This marks the first time Anthropic's quarterly revenue has exceeded that of OpenAI. Additionally, Anthropic recorded a slight adjusted operating profit, widening the gap with OpenAI, which is still facing substantial losses. However, the profit figures of the two companies cannot be directly compared. OpenAI's operating loss includes stock-based compensation, while Anthropic's adjusted profit may exclude this cost. The clear reversal is in revenue: in the second quarter, Anthropic has transitioned from a follower to a leader. OpenAI informed investors that after launching a new batch of models in July, its revenue growth rate has accelerated again. However, it remains to be seen whether this rebound can close the gap with Anthropic.
