Shielded Labs stated that the vulnerability is real and exploitable, with Taylor having written an exploit in a local testing environment that could generate unlimited and undetectable forged ZEC. Due to the privacy properties of Orchard, it is not possible to prove through cryptographic means whether the vulnerability was exploited before the fix; however, they believe the likelihood of prior exploitation is low. Shielded Labs is exploring a network upgrade proposal to deploy a new shielded pool and implement turnstile accounting for all tokens from the Orchard pool, allowing anyone to verify the integrity of the Zcash supply and prove that there are no forged ZEC in the Orchard pool.
