Bitcoin approaches 'late bear market territory' as regime signals echo 2022 bottom, K33 says
Bitcoin’s current derivatives and positioning regime closely resemble late-2022 bear market conditions, typically followed by prolonged consolidation rather than immediate recovery, according to K33.

Defensive sentiment, falling leverage, and declining ETF exposure suggest the market may be near a bottom but could remain rangebound between $60,000 and $75,000 for an extended period, Head of Research Vetle Lunde said.

Bitcoin's (BTC) current market structure closely resembles the late stages of the 2022 bear market, with derivatives positioning, exchange-traded fund flows, and macro indicators signaling a prolonged consolidation phase rather than an imminent breakout, according to research and brokerage firm K33.

In a new report late Tuesday, K33 Head of Research Vetle Lunde said its proprietary regime indicator, which incorporates derivatives yields, open interest, ETF flows, and macro inputs such as the U.S. yield curve, shows "strikingly strong similarities" to periods in September and November 2022 — both near the global bottom of that downturn.

However, while those historical regimes marked market lows, they were followed by extended stretches of sluggish price action, producing muted forward returns and lengthy consolidation periods, Lunde noted.

Bitcoin has already fallen sharply from recent highs, shedding nearly 28% since January, while broader derivatives signals show defensive positioning, according to K33. Funding rates have remained negative for more than 11 consecutive days, and notional open interest fell below 260,000 BTC, reflecting investors unwinding long positions, Lunde said. This positioning, combined with declining leverage, suggests a low near-term risk of derivatives-driven squeezes, he added.

PALM BEACH, Fla. — Prediction markets are starting to play a role in how traditional financial markets move, New York Stock Exchange President Lynn Martin said Wednesday at the World Liberty forum in Palm Beach.

“It was very clear for us… that prediction markets [were being used] as an input to traditional markets,” she said at the event hosted at Mar-a-Lago, pointing to a moment during the 2024 U.S. presidential election when S&P futures spiked unexpectedly. According to Martin, the move was later explained by crypto-based prediction platform Polymarket having shown Donald Trump as the likely winner before other sources did.

The comment highlights a growing awareness among institutional players of how on-chain information can influence market behavior. Unlike traditional polling or slow-moving forecasts, Polymarket’s real-time pricing offers a kind of crowdsourced probability feed that traders may find useful.

The NYSE's interest goes beyond observation. Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), which owns the NYSE, made a $2 billion strategic investment in Polymarket in October, signaling that the world's largest stock exchange operator sees a future in blockchain-based forecasting tools.

CFTC Chair Michael Selig, who took office late last year, echoed Martin's comments on prediction markets' role in society, saying they have national security implications and act as a check on traditional newspaper journalism. He also referenced their role in entertainment and sports — the latter being an area state regulators are paying particular attention to.

"The states have really led this campaign of open warfare against markets that are in the jurisdiction of the CFTC," Selig said. "The CFTC has for decades [overseen] prediction markets."
