Cryptocurrency asset management company Bitwise stated that the current high level of market anxiety could indicate that the crypto market is approaching its bottom.


The company argued that today’s investor psychology is similar to the sentiment at the 2018 and 2022 cycle lows, periods that presented “excellent buying opportunities.”


Bitwise’s Chief Investment Officer, Matt Hougan, noted that investors who bought at the 2018 lows saw returns of approximately 2000%, while those who took positions at the 2022 lows achieved gains of around 300% within three years. Hougan stated that the disconnect between current price movements and the fundamental development of the sector reflects the characteristics of past cycles.


According to Hougan, the rise of stablecoins, progress in asset tokenization, and developments at the intersection of AI and finance indicate that the crypto ecosystem continues to mature. Therefore, despite short-term price pressure, the firm does not see a structural breakdown in the fundamental dynamics of the sector.


According to Bitwise’s analysis, crypto bear markets typically end not with a sudden wave of euphoria, but with emotional exhaustion. The company stated that investor risk appetite is weak in the current environment, but this could also be a natural part of the bottoming process.


Potential upside catalysts include the enactment of the Clarity Act in the US, an improvement in overall market risk perception, strengthening expectations of interest rate cuts, and technological breakthroughs at the intersection of AI and cryptocurrency. According to Bitwise, unless there is a sudden and strong positive shock, the market may enter a “gradual bottoming out” phase.

Bitcoin is testing old support levels again, but analysts say patience matters more than optimism as macro pressure keeps the market fragile.Bitcoin is retesting the $74,000 area, a level that previously marked the start of a strong six-month rally in 2024.

Macro pressure and geopolitics, including Trump’s tariffs and ETF outflows, continue to weigh on Bitcoin, reinforcing its role as a risk asset in the short term.

Near-term conditions remain cautious. Analysts warn of false breakouts, fading rallies, and the need for patience until Bitcoin establishes a clearer trading range.
Bitcoin price has once again approached a key level around $74,000. This is where BTC began its recovery back in April last year. Since then, the market has not revisited this zone.

From that level, Bitcoin went on a strong run. The uptrend, with only shallow pullbacks, lasted roughly six months. It culminated in a new all-time high on Oct. 6, when BTC briefly touched $126,080. That peak now sits almost 40% above current prices.

But the context today looks very different.

On the one hand, $74,000 has history on its side. Last year, it acted as a clear bottom. Buyers stepped in aggressively, and the market turned higher. That memory still matters.

On the other hand, sentiment has changed since the October crypto sell-off. Buyers now look hesitant. Every attempt by Bitcoin to push out of its current range is quickly met with selling pressure. Rallies fade fast. 


A deeper drop below $60,000 would likely require a clear surge in panic selling, which some experts see as less likely given the behavior of long-term holders.

Everstake, a crypto staking provider, said in a new report that 2025 was a “year of sharp contrasts” for Ethereum, filled with major network upgrades and rising institutional adoption even as the price of ETH remained relatively flat.


In its Ethereum Staking Insights & Protocol Analysis report, Everstake said total value staked reached about 36.08 million ETH, or roughly 29.3% of supply, with net growth of more than 1.8 million ETH. As of Tuesday, Jan. 27, about 36.5 million ETH is staked – roughly 30.26% of supply, according to Coinbase data.


The report also highlighted continued growth in network activity, with Ethereum Layer 1 (L1) transactions rising about 30% over the year to around 1.5-1.6 million per day, while Layer 2 throughput surpassed roughly 300-330 transactions per second (TPS).


The findings underscore that Ethereum has continued to scale and attract larger players despite ETH’s underperformance. Currently, Ethereum’s total value locked (TVL) stands at nearly $72 billion, while Ether is changing hands at $2,930, up 4% on the day, but down 10% over the year.


Everstake said the Layer 1 is increasingly being used as a settlement layer, while most day-to-day activity has shifted to Layer 2. The findings pointed to protocol upgrades, including Pectra, which introduced EIP-7251 to raise the maximum effective validator balance from 32 ETH to 2,048 ETH, allowing large stakers to consolidate validators.
