Is Ethereum’s Stabilization Ahead?
On the technical end, Ethereum remains under heavy pressure after slipping below the lower half of its recent range, with price now hovering just above the psychological $2,000 area. This zone now acts as near-term support, but it sits well above the lower Bollinger Band near $1,684, which represents the next major downside buffer if selling resumes.

On the upside, recovery attempts face layered resistance. The first major barrier is the 20-day SMA, which aligns with the Bollinger mid-band near $2,488. This level has capped price repeatedly and defines the line between corrective bounces and a broader trend shift.

Above it, the upper Bollinger Band near $3,291 marks the wider resistance ceiling, representing the extreme of the recent volatility envelope and a level sellers previously defended aggressively.

Volatility remains high, with the 20-period standard deviation rising to about 401.77, signaling expanding price swings. Bollinger Bands are still wide, confirming that Ethereum is trading in a high-volatility environment.

Until volatility contracts and price reclaims the mid-band, momentum stays skewed to the downside. A flattening standard deviation alongside a move back above the 20-day SMA would be the first technical sign that bearish pressure may be easing.

More than half of bitcoin’s invested supply has a cost basis above $88,000

An onchain indicator suggests that most bitcoin $BTC$87,809.24 investors are currently under pressure, with 63% of all wealth invested in the largest cryptocurrency having a cost basis above $88,000, according to data from Checkonchain.

That means the majority of capital entered the market at a higher price than $BTC trades at today. Invested wealth refers to the total value of capital deployed in bitcoin when the coins last moved on chain. That's different from the cost basis, which is the average price at which that bitcoin was acquired.

This insight comes from the a measure called the UTXO Realized Price Distribution (URPD). URPD illustrates the price levels at which the existing supply of bitcoin last moved on chain. Each bar represents the amount of bitcoin whose most recent transaction occurred within a specific price range.

The bitcoin price has been constrained between $80,000 and $90,000 since November. URPD highlights how much capital is currently underwater. Tens of billions of dollars sit between $85,000 and $90,000. A price move below $85,000 could intensify selling pressure as investors attempt to limit losses. Long-term holders are already selling at the fastest pace in six months.

Adding to the risk, there is relatively little supply between $70,000 and $80,000. If the $80,000 level fails, last tested in November, a rapid move toward $70,000 becomes more likely.

Looking ahead to February, bitcoin is on track to finish January little changed, without the typical relief rally after seeing three consecutive months of declines. Historically, February has been a strong month, averaging gains of around 13%, according to Coinglass data. Bitcoin shakes off early decline, returns to $70,000 as Bernstein reiterates $150,000 outlook


Breaking a familiar pattern, bitcoin BTC$70,385.26 is on the rise during the U.S. session, climbing to $70,800 after falling to just above $68,000 earlier in the day.


Bitcoin is now higher by 0.5% over the past 24 hours, with ether ETH$2,127.78, $XRP $XRP$1.4449 and solana SOL$87.45 ahead closer to 1.5% over the same time frame.


Risk assets are generally in the green on Monday, with the Nasdaq up 1% and the S&P 500 up 0.5%. Gold is ahead 1.9% to $5,075 per ounce, and silver is up 7.4% to $82.50 per ounce.


"What we are experiencing is the weakest bitcoin bear case in its history," wrote Bernstein's Gautam Chhugani, reiterating the firm's $150,000 year-end price target on bitcoin.


"When all stars are aligned, [the] Bitcoin community manufactures a self-imposed crisis of confidence," Chhugani continued. "Nothing blew up, no skeletons will unravel; [the] media is back again to write an obituary."


"Time," said Chhugani, "remains a flat circle on Bitcoin."


Getting a bit more technical, Schwab's Jim Ferraioli said it is helpful to look to bitcoin miners to determine when the bottom is in.


“Previous selloffs have usually bottomed near bitcoin’s cost of production," said Ferraioli. "Miners with less efficient equipment will often shut down operations temporarily ... We can see this in real time by watching the mining difficulty adjustment — as more miners leave the network, difficulty falls. Once it starts to rise again, that is confirmation the bottom may be in."


Indeed, CoinDesk reported earlier that bitcoin mining difficulty just dropped by its largest amount since 2021 as at least some miners did capitulate to plunging prices.
