Japan quietly becomes APAC’s top local stablecoin market

Japan has quietly become the largest local stablecoin market in APAC, overtaking Singapore as yen-linked tokens drive regional on-chain supply.


Japan has overtaken Singapore as the largest hub for local-currency stablecoins in the Asia-Pacific region [APAC], according to on-chain supply data. It marks a quiet but notable shift in where non-USD stablecoin activity is concentrating.

Aggregate APAC local stablecoin supply has rebounded since mid-2025, rising from roughly $40 million at its low to nearly $58–60 million by early 2026.

That recovery, however, has been narrow and Japan-led, with yen-linked tokens accounting for the majority of recent growth.

JPYC drives the supply rebound

The clearest change is the rise of JPYC, Japan’s yen-denominated stablecoin. By February 2026,

JPYC’s on-chain supply stood at approximately $26.4 million, making it the single largest local stablecoin in APAC. 

Also, it accounts for nearly half of the region’s local-currency stablecoin market

Netherlands parliament has approved a reform introducing an effective 36% tax on capital income, including stocks and crypto assets.

This means the Netherlands is moving to one of the most radical investment tax systems in the world. On February 12, 2026, the lower house passed a law that shifts taxation to actual returns instead of the previously assumed (deemed) return.

Tax on unrealized gains

The key change is a Capital Growth Tax. From now on, tax is paid not only when you sell an asset and cash out, but annually.

Example:
If you bought Bitcoin or stocks for €10,000 and by the end of the year they are worth €15,000, you must pay tax on the €5,000 gain, even if you didn’t sell anything.

Risk:
If the market drops the following year, last year’s tax won’t automatically be refunded (although a loss carryforward mechanism is expected to be introduced).

36% rate

The Box 3 tax rate (savings and investments) has steadily increased in recent years and is now fixed at 36%. It applies to the net annual increase in the value of your assets.

BlackRock doubles down on bitcoin fund offerings with income-focused filing
BlackRock (BLK) is moving deeper into the cryptocurrency exchange-traded fund (ETF) market with a plan to offer income from bitcoin BTC$87,787.23 exposure.

The world's largest asset manager, with an estimated $12.5 trillion in assets under management, filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) a Form S-1 to list the iShares Bitcoin Premium Income ETF.

The proposed fund would actively manage exposure to bitcoin, either directly or through shares of BlackRock’s existing iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), while generating income by selling call options on that exposure.

This “covered-call” approach is already common in stock-based income funds, and some fund managers have already applied it to the crypto market. Through a covered-call strategy, the fund would generate income by selling a counterparty the right to purchase its underlying at a fixed price.

The fund, which doesn’t yet have a ticker or fee defined, would actively manage this covered-call strategy and would distribute the generated premiums to investors as income. The tradeoff here is it effectively trades potential upside for income.

Funds with similar strategies to generate income from options include the Roundhill Bitcoin Covered Call Strategy ETF (YBTC), Amplify Bitcoin Max Income Covered Call ETF (BAGY), and the NEOS Bitcoin High Income ETF (BTCI).

Still, BlackRock’s entry stands out for its scale and ties to IBIT, already the dominant spot bitcoin ETF with over $69.7 billion in assets according to SoSoValue data. IBIT and other bitcoin funds offered by BlackRock have been so successful they have become the firm’s top revenue source.

Some covered-call ETFs tend to dilute net asset value (NAV) as they offer higher yields to investors, partly through the return of capital. YBTC, for example, currently shows it has a 35.87% distribution rate, while BTCI shows its distribution rate is at 27.25%. BAGY’s distribut
