On June 20, senior research scientist John Jumper announced on Friday that he will leave Google DeepMind to join the artificial intelligence startup Anthropic. This marks another significant departure of a core talent from the tech giant's AI research division. Jumper, who won the 2024 Nobel Prize alongside Google's Demis Hassabis, is best known as a co-developer of AlphaFold, a groundbreaking AI model that has completed predictions of over 200 million protein structures, significantly shortening the time required for biological and medical research. Jumper stated on social media platform X, "After nearly nine years of work, I have decided to leave Google DeepMind and join Anthropic." Major tech companies like Meta and Alphabet, Google's parent company, as well as emerging AI firms like Anthropic and OpenAI, are engaged in fierce competition for talent, all vying to recruit top researchers to develop the next generation of AI systems.
