Claim1,200 USDT in the Monthly Creation Challenge

Traders watching Bitcoin climb alongside US software stocks last week may have drawn the wrong conclusion. According to NYDIG, a financial services company focused on Bitcoin, the visual parallel is misleading.

Only about 25% of BTC price movement can be traced back to its relationship with equity markets. The remaining 75% is driven by forces that have nothing to do with the S&P 500 or the Nasdaq.

Greg Cipolaro, head of research at NYDIG, made the case in a Friday note. His argument: when Bitcoin and software stocks move in the same direction, it is not because they are structurally linked. Both are reacting to the same macro pressures — the kind that push investors toward or away from risk assets broadly.

“The conclusion that Bitcoin and software equities have structurally converged is overstated,” Cipolaro wrote.

A Shared Macro Trigger, Not A Common Identity
Bitcoin’s 90-day rolling correlation with software stocks has climbed since the cryptocurrency hit a record above $126,000 in early October. But Cipolaro pointed out that its correlations with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq have risen at the same time.

Liquidity Sensitive Assets
That pattern suggests the shift is not specific to software stocks — it is a wider phenomenon tied to investor appetite for risk.

Data shows that both the alpha crypto and software equities are being treated as long-duration, liquidity-sensitive assets. When macro conditions favor risk-taking, both go up. When they don’t, both get hit.

That shared sensitivity to monetary conditions is what has been driving the parallel movement, not any deeper connection between the two.

The “Bitcoin is a tech stock” narrative has circulated before. It tends to resurface during periods when correlations tick higher and the assets appear to move in lockstep. Cipolaro’s note pushes back on that framing directly.

Bitcoin rose in line with the global market recovery after US President Donald Trump hinted that the war against Iran could soon end.

Bitcoin surged as much as 3.4% in New York trading, reaching $69,523. This rise in Bitcoin was mirrored by other major altcoins such as Ethereum and Solana. In a phone interview with CBS News, Trump stated that the operation against Iran was progressing faster than planned. This statement, coming on the tenth day of the Iran war, emerged amid increasing economic pressure as oil prices surged above $100.

The war with Iran had caused significant fluctuations in global markets. In particular, the near-halt of tanker traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy transit points, increased concerns about global oil supply and created uncertainty in the markets.

Joshua Lim, co-head of global marketing at FalconX, said that Bitcoin’s strong price performance is partly due to continued buying by investors of digital asset treasures. Lim also noted that the “de-grossing” effect, caused by some participants in traditional financial markets closing their short positions in Bitcoin, also supported the rise.

Bitcoin’s outperforming of stocks earlier in the day, coupled with the sharp rise in oil prices, has led some investors to reconsider cryptocurrency as a potential inflation hedge. According to Jake Ostrovskis, head of over-the-counter trading at Wintermute, the oil rally and the resulting inflation concerns have brought Bitcoin’s role as an “inflation hedge” back into focus. Ostrovskis stated, “What’s really remarkable is not the macroeconomic environment, but rather Bitcoin’s ability to remain strong and rise at a time when most investors were expecting a decline.”

Bitcoin Dropped 22% This Year, But MSTR Held Up Better

Strategy has historically carried a 1.5 to 1.8x beta to Bitcoin, meaning it tends to amplify $BTC moves in both directions. But 2026 is telling a different story.

Year to date, Bitcoin is down 22.07% while MicroStrategy stock is down just 9.50%. That’s a downside ratio closer to 0.4x, not 1.8x.

On the upside, however, the amplification is alive. Between February 5 to March 6, MSTR’s price rose roughly 44% within its range, while Bitcoin rose about 15%. That’s closer to a 3x multiplier going up.

That means MSTR has absorbed less than half of Bitcoin’s downside while sitting on a treasury of 738,731 $BTC worth approximately $51.1 billion at current prices.
