Why Hashdex’s new crypto ETF keeps 100% of your initial staking yields and 40% of everything else
Hashdex plans to put some of the crypto held by its Nasdaq CME Crypto Index ETF (NCIQ) to work through staking. The sponsor takes the first slice of net income, while common shareholders begin sharing in the rewards after an annual threshold is cleared.

The framework is prospective. A July 23 Form 8-K named Coinbase Cloud as the initial provider and said staking was expected to begin promptly, subject to operational readiness.

Under the July 23 prospectus supplement, a staking provider first retains its portion of gross rewards. Hashdex then receives all remaining net staking income up to a dollar threshold equal to 0.25% of common-share net asset value through one Sponsor Share, a separate unlisted class held exclusively by Hashdex.  Income above that threshold is split 40% to Hashdex and 60% to the trust for holders of publicly traded NCIQ common shares.

The threshold is measured over each fiscal year and prorated for a partial year. If net staking income stays at or below it, none is allocated to the trust for common shareholders’ benefit.

For illustration, if net staking income reached 1% of common-share NAV after provider fees over a full year, the trust would receive 0.45% for common shareholders. Hashdex would collect the remaining 0.55%, comprising the first 0.25% and 40% of the next 0.75 percentage point. The figures are illustrative rather than a forecast or realized return.
The Sponsor Share return is separate from NCIQ’s 0.25% annual management fee and is not netted against it.

Provider deductions vary by asset.  Hashdex’s NCIQ product page lists an 8% fee on gross ether staking rewards, an 8% validator commission for Solana, and a 5% validator commission for Cardano.

As of July 26, Ethereum represented 11.75% of NCIQ’s holdings, Solana 3.17%, and Cardano 0.49%, a combined 15.41%. That is not the amount staked. Hashdex

However, in the last 24 hours, the memecoin market cap rose 8% to $23 billion, while trading volume rose 77% to $2.85 billion.

Amid this sector-wide trend reversal, MemeCore [M] also rebounded, successfully holding $1.1 and climbing to a local high of 1.329.

As of this writing, MemeCore was trading around $1.32, after rising by 11.2% on the daily charts. However, its trading volume dropped by 13%, suggesting that market participation is yet to

recover.

MemeCore demand recovers amid sector-wide capital rotation

As the sector-wide momentum shifted, M traders also rushed to position themselves, fearing they would miss out.

As a result, the memecoin's Open Interest climbed by 9.4% to $25.66 million. Such a jump in Ol suggested increased participation as traders opened new positions.

Meanwhile, the memecoin's Long/Short Ratio jumped above 1 across exchanges. The overall ratio was around 1.07 as of this writing, reflecting high demand for long positions.

This implies that traders mostly opened long positions, indicating bullishness as traders expected the market to continue rising.

Bitcoin $BTC$65,250.07, the leading cryptocurrency by market value, is back above $65,000, with prices up about 1.2% over 24 hours. Ether (ETH) has risen by over 3% to nearly $1,950 alongside 1% to 2% gains in other top 10 token, including solana (SOL) and $XRP ($XRP).

Futures tied to WTI gapped lower on Monday, trading around 5% lower at $85 as of this writing, while those linked to Nasdaq and S&P 500 traded half a percent higher. Currency markets also showed risk-on trends, with the Aussie dollar and euro gaining against the U.S. dollar.

The United States and Iran paused military strikes against each other for a second consecutive day, creating room for a diplomatic breakthrough. The war, which began in late February, entered a fragile ceasefire in the second quarter, but it quickly unraveled.

Iran reportedly said that it would continue to halt airstrikes as long as the U.S. did the same, marking a tenous start of what appears to be yet another peace process.

"Prices are also responding to macro developments," Vikram Subburaj, CEO of India-based FIU-registered Giottus exchange, said in an email.

Speaking on the social media platform X, Armstrong emphasized that artificial intelligence and cryptocurrencies are not competing technologies, but rather complementary infrastructures.

Armstrong stated that artificial intelligence has become one of the most important technological trends of our time, yet the value proposition of cryptocurrencies continues to strengthen. According to the Coinbase CEO, cryptocurrency technology is a kind of general-purpose infrastructure, like electricity or the internet, and will be one of the fundamental tools for AI systems to conduct financial transactions in the future.

Armstrong argued that the need for digital assets will increase, especially with the proliferation of autonomous AI agents, and stated that current financial systems are not fully adaptable to this new technology.

Armstrong stated that AI agents cannot open bank accounts or wait for international money transfers to be completed, therefore cryptocurrencies offer a significant advantage as a real-time and programmable payment system.

According to the Coinbase CEO, in the future, AI agents will not only make payments; they will also be able to independently perform numerous economic activities such as fund management, investment transactions, trading, financial advisory, and capital raising. In this scenario, blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies will form the fundamental infrastructure enabling AI systems to conduct secure and seamless financial transactions.

Meanwhile, there are signs that the company is highly undervalued. It has a market capitalization of $9.52 billion, much lower than its Ethereum holdings of $11 billion.

Most notably, unlike Strategy ), BitMine has no debt. Its only liability is from its preferred stock, which is expected to cost it almost $40 million a year.

Cross-chain bridging and atomic swap protocol Garden Finance temporarily took its app offline after blockchain security firm Blockaid reported an exploit targeting the protocol's hash time-locked contracts (HTLC) across four blockchain networks.

On Sunday, Blockaid said an attacker drained about $450,000 in USDT from Garden's HTLC contracts on Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum and BNB Smart Chain. HTLCs are time-bound escrow contracts that Garden uses to facilitate atomic swaps between Bitcoin and assets on other networks.

Blockaid described the exploit as ongoing when it published its alert but did not disclose the suspected vulnerability or say whether the incident affected user funds. Blockaid's alert included addresses associated with the attacker and the affected contracts.

Garden said separately that it had detected "unusual activity" and was conducting a full investigation while its app remained temporarily offline.

Garden Finance and Blockaid acknowledged Cointelegraph's request for comments.

The incident follows an October 2025 breach in which an attacker stole about $11.4 million after compromising the operating environment of one of Garden's solvers. Garden said that breach did not affect its protocol contracts or put user funds at risk.
