Bullish Analyst Tom Lee Speaks Out: “This Latest Move by the U.S. Treasury Department Is for Cryptocurrencies…



Fundstrat co-founder and analyst Tom Lee said that expectations that the U.S. Treasury Department may deploy approximately $1 trillion to expand its long-term bond repurchase program could be positive for financial markets.

According to Lee, a large-scale buyback of long-term government bonds by the U.S. Treasury Department could put downward pressure on long-term interest rates. He noted that such a development could support the valuations of assets sensitive to long-term interest rates, such as stocks, cryptocurrencies, gold, and real estate.

The renowned strategist stated that the decline in long-term interest rates would increase the attractiveness of “long-term assets,” which are particularly sensitive to the present value of future cash flows. Lee argued that bond buybacks should therefore be considered a marginal improvement in liquidity conditions in the markets.

Treasury’s bond buyback plan fights the market and heightens the danger, billionaire Druckenmiller says
Billionaire investor Stanley Druckenmiller, a former mentor to U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, has a lesson for his onetime protege: governments cannot indefinitely fight market fundamentals.

That lesson comes in response to the Treasury’s recent decision, under Bessent’s leadership, to increase bond buybacks to $4 billion in an effort to tame longer duration yields or borrowing costs, which recently hit the highest since 2007.

Druckenmiller’s point is that such interventions may offer temporary relief but cannot overcome the underlying forces pushing yields higher, namely nominal growth rate, large fiscal deficits and a growing government debt burden. The federal debt recently hit the $40 trillion mark for the first time ever.

“Governments defending prices against fundamentals always lose," Druckenmiller wrote in an opinion piece for The Wall Street Journal, adding that, “rising interest rates are a signal of trouble ahead [and] artificially suppressing it heightens the danger.”

He argued that markets gather and process information far better than any committee of people ever could. The long-term Treasury yield acts as a natural check on how much the government can borrow. Take that check away, he said, and you also take away the pressure on politicians to stay fiscally responsible.

No need for intervention

Druckenmiller argued that the planned intervention makes little sense because the elevated 10-year yield simply reflects the nominal growth rate, meaning financial conditions remain accommodative rather than restrictive. Conditions become restrictive only when the yield rises higher than the growth rate.

Cryptocurrency Exchange Trading Volume Doubled in Five Days! Will the Recovery Continue? It is noted that the proliferation of crypto ETFs and digital asset treasury companies (DATs) could put long-term pressure on centralized exchange volumes. Conversely, demand in the altcoin market is expected to remain largely on CEX platforms. Fast listing, a wide range of trading pairs, and advanced trading tools for small market cap tokens are among the advantages that ETF and DAT structures cannot easily offer.

The strong rally in the market also supported trading volumes. Bitcoin gained over 23% last week, while Ethereum rose over 30%. The altcoin market, which represents the total cryptocurrency market capitalization excluding BTC and ETH, also increased by approximately 13% during the same period.
