Wall Street's clearinghouse seeks 'high-performance' blockchains to tokenize corporate actions



Wall Street's clearinghouse is working with blockchain developers to bring one of capital market's least glamorous but most operationally complex functions onchain: corporate actions.

Frank La Salla, CEO of the Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation (DTCC), said Wednesday at Consensus 2026 in Miami that the market infrastructure giant is collaborating with several layer-1 (L1) blockchain networks to improve how dividend payments, tender offers and other post-trade events could be processed in tokenized markets.

"We are working with some very good L1s right now, who are focused on the ability to process at faster rates, have higher resiliency," he said.

Currently, the bottleneck is that on most blockchain networks could take a few days to process corporate actions, he pointed out.

"We process millions of dividend payments a day to feed to the industry," Le Salla said. "We need high-performance L1s to do that."

DTCC sits at the center of U.S. capital markets infrastructure, processing roughly $20 trillion in Treasury and corporate securities trades each day. The clearinghouse has spent nearly a decade exploring blockchain applications, but La Salla said the technology only became commercially meaningful once real-world use cases began to emerge in the pst few years.

Recently, the firm accelerated its push to modernize market infrastructure with tokenization and blockchain tech. This week, DTCC announced to begin testing its tokenized securities platform in July ahead of a broader rollout in October.

Amid the bullish sentiment in the cryptocurrency market after Bitcoin ($BTC) reclaimed its $81,000 mark this week, Coinbase released COIN50 Index data for April, where the overall crypto market witnessed strong performance over the last month.

According to the official data shared by Coinbase Institutional, the COIN50 Index has jumped by approximately 11.05% in the last month. One of the major reasons behind this surge is the easing of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East after the U.S. and Iran returned to peace talks following a ceasefire in the biggest war of the decade.

The upward momentum in the crypto market was witnessed after initial shocks earlier this year, when Bitcoin drastically plunged below $70,000. In April, Bitcoin price increased by around 16%, while Ethereum shot up by around 14%.

Grayscale Investments reshuffled its crypto portfolios this week as part of its Q1 2026 fund rebalancing. The firm removed Aerodrome Finance from its DeFi Fund and replaced it with Ethena, a yield-focused decentralized finance protocol.

Ethena rose 4.33% in the last 24 hours following the announcement. Grayscale also made adjustments to its Smart Contract Fund, though no new assets were added to that portfolio.

Ethena Replaces Aerodrome

The biggest change came in Grayscale’s DeFi Fund. Following the CoinDesk DeFi Select Index methodology, the firm sold AERO and portions of other existing holdings to purchase $ENA.

As of May 1, 2026, the fund holdings stood at:

Uniswap (UNI) – 35.22%

Aave (AAVE) – 21.36%

Ondo (ONDO) – 19.83%

Ethena ($ENA) – 13.59%

Curve (CRV) – 5.27%

Lido DAO (LDO) – 4.73%

Smart Contract Fund Stays Focused on Layer 1s

Grayscale also adjusted the weightings of its Smart Contract Fund using the CoinDesk Smart Contract Platform Select Capped Index methodology. Unlike the DeFi Fund, no assets were removed or added.

The updated allocations are:

Ethereum (ETH) – 30.14%

Solana (SOL) – 29.69%

Cardano (ADA) – 17.96%

Avalanche (AVAX) – 7.69%

Hedera (HBAR) – 7.41%

Sui (SUI) – 7.11%

The allocation shows Grayscale still heavily favors established smart contract ecosystems led by Ethereum and Solana

Compared to smaller speculative projects, Zcash is in a unique position because it combines privacy features with a more established reputation.

The narrative was further reinforced by institutional developments. Zcash trading is now supported by Robinhood, making it accessible to a far wider range of consumers. Furthermore, increasing use of shielded transactions indicates that the network's privacy features are being actively utilized rather than disregarded.
