Gold has fallen nearly 20% from its January record, putting it close to the threshold that defines a technical bear market. The metal has long been treated as a safe haven during periods of uncertainty, but that reputation is being tested. Prices have dropped roughly 10% since the end of February despite escalating tensions in the Middle East.

Interest rate expectations have shifted significantly across financial markets. Investors no longer expect meaningful cuts this year, and monetary policy is broadly anticipated to stay tight through December 2026. Higher oil prices, tied to ongoing geopolitical uncertainty, are pushing inflation forecasts upward. That combination, elevated rates and rising inflation, directly undermines the investment case for gold.

When gold's price is measured against M2 money supply, which covers cash, deposits, and other liquid money held in the economy, a different picture emerges. On that basis, gold is trading near the same relative levels it reached during major peaks in 1974 and 2011. Those peaks occurred when gold was priced at $200 and $1,800 per ounce, respectively. The current reading suggests gold may be consolidating near a cyclical ceiling rather than breaking to new highs.

Bitcoin presents a contrasting setup on the same framework. Relative to M2, Bitcoin is in a consolidation phase that resembles conditions seen in 2024. It is also retesting its 2021 highs on a liquidity-adjusted basis. In every previous cycle, Bitcoin has moved above its prior liquidity-adjusted peak once consolidation ended.

Bitcoin is currently sitting about 40% below its October high.
