The aftermath of the exploit saw whales pull out millions worth of coins, including stablecoins, from Aave, leading to borrowing pools running short of liquidity. This forced some traders to resort to borrowing stablecoins against their own locked stablecoin deposits. The net result was a surge in borrowing rates that could have easily spilled over into the wider market.

Normalization occurred after Aave governance suggested measures to improve stablecoin liquidity and ecosystem participants raised more than $160 million in relief funding.

Bitcoin’s aggressive rally intensified over the last 72 hours, tacking on $5,000 to reach an intraday peak of $79,500 on April 22 (11.15 a.m. EST). This surge marks the first time bitcoin has tested these levels since early February. The price action underscores the market’s heightened sensitivity to the Middle East; specifically, bitcoin has emerged as a high-velocity proxy for geopolitical risk, surging as President Donald Trump’s eleventh-hour extension of the Iran ceasefire staved off an immediate return to large-scale hostilities.Although it retreated to just under $79,000 soon after reaching its daily peak, market data shows that bitcoin was still nearly 4% higher than at the same time Tuesday and up 6.6% over seven days. The gain saw its market cap rise to approximately $1.58 trillion, a marked increase from the $1.36 trillion observed on April 1. Bitcoin’s climb saw $207 million in short bets liquidated in a 24-hour window, compared to $28 million in long bets.

the surge was tied to the extension of a ceasefire between Iran and the U.S. announced by President Donald Trump on Tuesday night. This followed Iran’s refusal to attend peace talks in Islamabad, Pakistan. The American Innovation Project (AIP), a non-profit advocacy group, has added a crypto policy specialist to its ranks as it expands its work on digital asset legislation.
Jacob Smagula, a 2026 graduate of Claremont McKenna College, will join Democratic Representative Ritchie Torres’ (D-NY) team, AIP said. Smagula brings a background in crypto policy and industry affairs, having worked on the government relations team at publicly traded bitcoin miner MARA and currently serving on the policy team at the DeFi Education Fund.

He has also held roles on Capitol Hill, including internships with Representative Jake Auchincloss and Senator Angus King.

Smagula’s appointment comes as part of AIP’s Policy Innovation Fellowship, a two-part program designed to give congressional staff hands-on exposure to emerging technologies and direct experience in Congress.

AIP also named Hugo Swangstu, a 2025 graduate of the University of Washington, as a fellow. Swangstu previously interned for Representative Adam Smith and Representative Torres and will serve in the Washington office of Representative Shomari Figures (D-AL).

“The next generation of policymakers must understand the technologies reshaping our economy, national security, and daily lives,” Torres said.

Figures added that “as technology continues to advance at a rapid pace, it's essential that Members of Congress are informed and prepared to craft sound tech policy."

The leading cryptocurrency, Bitcoin ($BTC), had a great start to the new week and continues this trend. Today, $BTC rose above $82,000 following news that the US-Iran war might end.

This situation has led to discussions of higher figures for $BTC, with Glassnode pointing to $92,000 for the Bitcoin price. Bitcoin could target $92,000 as a key on-chain benchmark gives a bullish signal.

Glassnode’s latest analysis states that the recent surge has pushed $BTC above its STH cost basis, which is currently $79,000.

According to analysts who point out that this STH cost basis is very important for $BTC, historically, breaking above this level has initiated a prolonged recovery phase.

Breaking above the STH cost basis could attract new buyers, prompt existing investors to make additional purchases, act as a catalyst for a macro uptrend, and also force short investors to close their positions. All of these factors would trigger an upward movement.

Finally, analysts noted that similar patterns have been seen before, citing January 2023, October 2023, October 2024, and April 2025. According to the data, analysts stated that $BTC rose by 30% in four weeks after the STH cost basis was broken.

Apart from Glassnode, analyst Mitchell Askew also noted: “$BTC has broken above the closely watched STH breakout level. This usually signals the end of a bear market or consolidation period.”

MN Capital founder Michael van de Poppe also identified $84,000-$86,000 as the next resistance area for Bitcoin. A breakout here could send $BTC towards the 50-week moving average around $90,000.
