The December Producer Price Index didn't just beat expectations, but it also revealed a persistent problem that forces markets to rethink the entire 2026 rate path.

Final demand PPI rose 0.5% month-over-month, the sharpest jump since July, driven almost entirely by a 0.7% surge in services while goods prices sat flat. The headline came in at 3.0% year over year, beating expectations of 2.7%, but core PPI rose to 3.3% from 2.9%, the highest level since July 2025.

Markets sold the news immediately. Bitcoin dipped below the $82,400 zone as it was trying to recover from an intraday low of $81,100. Meanwhile, Fed funds futures repriced to just 52 basis points of cuts for all of 2026, with the first quarter-point move now pegged for June.

The dollar index is up 0.82% over the past 24 hours, and real yields on 10-year TIPS are near 1.90%.

This raises the question of whether this confirms that disinflation has stalled in the exact place the Fed can't ignore: services, where pricing power is sticky, and margins are expanding rather than compressing.

Matt Hougan Claims the End of the Bitcoin Bear Market Is Approaching

According to one analyst, signals are strengthening that the “bear season” in the cryptocurrency markets is coming to an end. Matt Hougan, Chief Investment Officer (CIO) of Bitwise, claims that the massive rise in gold is beginning to lose momentum and that capital will flow back to Bitcoin.

Matt Hougan, a figure closely followed in the financial world, evaluated the dynamics between gold and Bitcoin in his latest broadcast. According to Hougan, Bitcoin, which has lagged behind in the “attention economy” due to the recent shift in investor interest towards gold and artificial intelligence (AI), is preparing to make a comeback as the tide turns.

Hougan notes that institutional investors are asking, “If Bitcoin is digital gold, why is it falling while gold is breaking records?” and that this has led to a “trend break.” However, the expert states that this process has come to an end, arguing that the wind is now beginning to turn against gold and in favor of Bitcoin.

Hougan argues that gold’s market value surpassing $30 trillion is actually very positive news for Bitcoin. Recalling that the entire gold market was worth $2.5 trillion when the first gold ETF was launched in 2004, Hougan says that today, the “store of value” (TAM) market, which Bitcoin is targeting, is heading towards $50 to $100 trillion. This means that Bitcoin’s share of this massive market will be much larger in the long term.

According to the analyst, the RSI (Relative Strength Index) in the Bitcoin/Gold pair is trading at its lowest levels in history. Hougan states that the fear and greed index among individual investors is at its lowest point, and predicts that Bitcoin’s exit from the “crypto winter” may be closer than many expect.

Bitcoin Hit a Major Milestone—Most Miners Won't Be Around for the Next One.

The Bitcoin network saw its 20 millionth $BTC mined this week, leaving just 1 million coins left to be paid as rewards to miners.

The milestone has crypto industry observers taking stock of the rapidly changing Bitcoin mining industry, and weighing the economics of a shifting landscape against expectations of Bitcoin’s performance as an investment.

Mining companies help secure the Bitcoin network and verify transactions, expending large amounts of energy in a race to solve cryptographic puzzles in exchange for transaction fees and newly created Bitcoin as rewards. It’s taken miners 16 years to mine the 20 millionth coin from Bitcoin’s inception, but it could take roughly 115 years to unlock the remaining supply, according to Wolfie Zhao, the head of research at TheEnergyMag.

That doesn’t necessarily mean the Bitcoin mining industry will look the way it does for the next century. John Todaro, a managing director and senior research analyst at Needham & Company, expects many publicly traded miners to exit Bitcoin mining in 2027 and 2028.

“We believe a large portion of the public Bitcoin miners will sell down nearly all of their Bitcoin holdings before year-end 2026 as they embark on [capital expenditure] spend related to AI workloads,” he wrote in a recent note shared with Decrypt. In other words, Bitcoin mining companies are pivoting to AI.

All the publicly traded Bitcoin miners the firm covers have allocated a portion of their compute power to high-performance computing, or HPC, and AI. It’s a shift that’s been going on for years.
