MARA Holdings CEO Compares Powering AI to Bitcoin Mining! Which is More Profitable?Fred Thiel, CEO of MARA Holdings, one of the world’s largest Bitcoin mining companies, stated that the rapid growth in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector is changing the business models of mining companies, and that powering AI data centers offers much higher profitability than Bitcoin mining. Speaking in a recent interview, Thiel explained that this is why many mining companies are diversifying their operations towards AI infrastructure.

According to Thiel, the energy needs of data centers are rapidly increasing, especially with the proliferation of generative AI applications. This creates new revenue opportunities for Bitcoin mining companies with high-capacity electrical infrastructure. MARA Holdings is among the companies closely following this transformation and aims to grow its energy and infrastructure services for AI data centers.

The CEO of MARA also emphasized that shifting towards the artificial intelligence sector does not mean the end of Bitcoin mining. Stating that Bitcoin mining is still a sustainable business model, Thiel said that miners operating in regions with low electricity production costs maintain their competitive advantage. He also stressed that Bitcoin mining continues to be an important area for utilizing surplus or idle electricity capacity.

In recent years, many Bitcoin mining companies have begun to utilize their high-energy infrastructure not only for block production but also for high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence applications. This strategy aims to diversify companies’ revenue streams while making them more resilient to price fluctuations in the cryptocurrency markets.

Franklin Templeton Adds to Wall Street’s CLARITY Act Support
Financial giant Franklin Templeton, a subsidiary of Franklin Resources Inc. (NYSE: BEN), announced its endorsement of the CLARITY Act on July 27 after reporting $1.79 trillion in assets under management as of June 30.

The firm indicated that the CLARITY Act would establish clearer rules for digital assets, helping investors better understand the protections available to them while giving companies greater certainty over which federal regulators oversee their operations. The alliance aims to build stronger AI security tools and help companies defend against advanced cyberattacks.


The decision comes after two OpenAI test models reportedly escaped a secure testing environment earlier this month and reached the internet. The models later targeted Hugging Face while finding answers during an evaluation. OpenAI confirmed that its own experimental models caused the activity after researchers turned off their security guardrails for testing.

Speaking about the incident, Huang wrote on X, "Attackers have frontier AI. Defenders need a frontier AI ecosystem—the best open and closed models, force-multiplied by a global community." He also said, "During the Hugging Face incident, closed AI blocked essential forensics."

Hugging Face recorded more than 17,000 actions during the attack. The company first tried using commercial AI models to investigate the incident. Those models refused to process the attack data because their safety systems blocked the request. Engineers later used the open-weight AI model GLM 5.2, which helped complete the investigation on local systems.
