After a bearish Q1, the big question is whether confidence in digital assets can hold. From a macro lens, the setup for a strong April bull run looks weak.

Polymarket data shows just a 14% chance of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz normalizing by month-end, while crude oil continues to trade near $112 per barrel.

This backdrop aligns with a recent Santiment report. As the chart below shows, discussions around the Iran-U.S. conflict currently rank first in social volume, highlighting rising macro-driven sentiment.

Naturally, the question becomes: With macro FUD dominating narratives, is Bitcoin’s [BTC] April rally now at risk?

Historically, Bitcoin has often rebounded strongly in Q2 after a weak Q1.

Last year, for example, Bitcoin declined 11.82% in Q1 before rallying nearly 30% in Q2, as markets absorbed the “Liberation Day” FUD tied to U.S. President Donald Trump’s shifting stance on tariff duties.

However, history also shows exceptions.

During the 2022 bear market, Bitcoin posted a mild 1.46% correction in Q1 and then plunged 56.2% in Q2, marking its worst quarterly performance of the year.

In this context, the key question is, will markets absorb the current FUD and spark another recovery, or is Bitcoin setting up for a deeper downside?

Either way, macro conditions continue to drive investor sentiment, meaning BTC’s April outlook now comes down to how markets position around the ongoing FUD. With markets increasingly pricing in risk, the 86% probability of “continued conflict” clearly remains front and center as a key signal for Q2.

Bitcoin ETFs 'will be larger' than gold ETFs: Analyst

Spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) could surpass gold ETFs in total assets under management (AUM) as investor demand expands beyond the traditional “digital gold” narrative, according to ETF analyst James Seyffart.

“There are just more use cases of why somebody would put a Bitcoin ETF in a portfolio,” Seyffart said on the Coin Stories podcast published to YouTube on Friday. He pointed to Bitcoin’s ($BTC) role as digital gold, a store of value, a portfolio diversifier, and a form of digital capital and property, adding that the market also views Bitcoin as a “growth risk asset.”

Seyffart explained that Bitcoin has “all these different ways” of being viewed, while gold only has “one of those things.”

“Our view is that Bitcoin ETFs will be larger than gold ETFs,” he added.

Bitcoin ETFs are a “hot sauce” in the portfolio

“There are so many people that could use it. They could be viewing it to put in their portfolio because they want to bet on like a growth and liquidity trade,” he said. “It can be hot sauce in a portfolio in that way,” he added.

Bitcoin is often compared to gold due to its limited supply and perceived role as a hedge against monetary debasement.

US-based gold ETFs recorded net outflows of $2.92 billion in March, while US spot Bitcoin ETFs attracted $1.32 billion in net inflows over the same period.

It’s worth noting, however, that the wrapped Bitcoin segment has been plagued by trust issues. In August 2024, the top contender in space, BitGo’s WBTC, faced community backlash. This was after it partnered with Justin Sun’s BiT Global.

The deal with BiT Global allowed Justin Sun access to the BTC in cold storage, used as collateral to back WBTC. This unsettled some investors and triggered some outflows at that time.

Sensing the distrust and vacuum created, Coinbase seized the opportunity. It quickly unveiled cbBTC, its rival product. It was an instant success. In just two months, it crossed $1B in market cap. In the last two years, the cbBTC market supply has grown to $6B, underscoring a strong demand.

However, it wasn’t long before Coinbase also faced community scrutiny over a lack of verifiable reserves backing cbBTC. Coinbase’s CEO Brian Armstrong’s response further alienated the community. He said,

As for cbBTC, yes, you’re trusting a centralized custodian to store the underlying BTC – we’ve never claimed otherwise.

The exchange eventually curved and posted proof of reserves for its product. However, the distrust lingered.

And, it seems Circle is betting on this. For Circle’s CEO,Jeremy Allaire, cirBTC will be a ‘neutral’ on-chain asset.
