Crypto exchanges are giving foreign traders access to Chinese AI stocks
Crypto traders are getting access to China’s AI stock rush through a route Beijing did not build for them. Instead of buying mainland shares, offshore investors are using perpetual futures tied to Chinese chip companies.

The contracts let users to wager on share values without actually holding the shares, and they are traded continuously on cryptocurrency exchanges.

Due to this arrangement, a distinct market for names has been established that is difficult for foreign capital to access through regular exchanges.

The biggest target is CXMT, a Chinese memory-chip maker due to start trading in Shanghai on Monday. TradeXYZ and Gate.com have listed perpetual contracts linked to the company before its public debut.

CoinGlass recorded about $19 million in CXMT perp volume over 24 hours. The chipmaker wants to collect nearly $10 billion, which would make the deal mainland China’s largest IPO since 2010.

Crypto platforms give offshore traders a way around China’s stock access rules

Beijing maintains a controlled framework to prevent foreign investment in Shanghai and Shenzhen stocks. Typically, foreign investors participate through the Qualified Foreign Institutional Investor framework or Hong Kong’s Stock Connect program.

There are restrictions to both methods. While limits limit the amount of money that can go through the authorized routes, Stock Connect only covers a limited number of businesses.

CXMT will enter Shanghai’s STAR Market, which has strict entry requirements for locals. Retail traders are required to maintain a minimum of 500,000 yuan, or around $74,000, in qualifying assets.

Additionally, a two-year trading history is necessary. This prevents many mainland purchasers from taking the company’s pricing into consideration.

The Bank of Russia has come to the defense of the recently passed cryptocurrency bill, which establishes clear distinctions between qualified and non-qualified investors, pushing lower purchasing limits for the former group.

On Friday, during a press conference following a Board of Directors’ meeting, Bank of Russia Governor Elvira Nabiullina ratified the need to establish this distinction, stressing that it was not limited to the cryptocurrency world and was a common element in regulation.

“Non-qualified investors have fewer opportunities because the government, through legislation, tries to protect them to avoid them embracing the risks that they don’t understand,” Nabiullina declared.

She also stressed these measures covered the crypto ecosystem, as digital assets can be seized from lawful owners abroad if they are suspected of having any links with Russia, and because of the crypto market’s volatility.

Bill No. 1194918-8, which is expected to become effective on September 1 alongside the long-awaited and recently confirmed rollout of the digital ruble, Russia’s central bank’s digital currency (CBDC), establishes a 300,000-ruble ($3,800) purchasing limit for non-qualified investors, while qualified investors enjoy limits ten times higher.

Nonetheless, Nabiullina highlighted the openness of the Russian crypto ecosystem, stressing that there were no limitations for repatriating and transferring digital assets abroad, just like in the current regulatory regime.

“Transfer of ordinary foreign currency to foreign accounts is not limited because that might be necessary in order to pay for health care services, for education,” Nabiullina said, but called on investors to be aware that when receiving these funds abroad, they would not have the protections of Russian Law.

While the crypto market is discussing Shiba Inu's ($SHIB) sudden daily price surge of nearly 40%, another record has been set inside the ecosystem itself — an abnormal deflationary wave. Over the past 24 hours, the meme coin's burn rate posted a vertical spike of 5,223.98%, permanently destroying 401,219,021 tokens, according to SHIBBurn portal.

Such aggressive pressure completely rewrote the weekly statistics, which had previously looked rather sleepy. Over the past seven days, the burn rate increased by 816.02%, removing 457,511,537 $SHIB from circulation.

Decoding $SHIB's 5,223% overnight burn rate spike

Comparing these figures reveals some amusing math, as almost the entire weekly burn volume went up in smoke during the past 24 hours alone. Most interestingly, the conveyor belt is not stopping for even a minute. Just one transaction over the past hour sent another 34,738,227 tokens to a burn address.

At the same time, complete madness was unfolding on exchanges. $SHIB recorded a net daily gain of 27.14%, although at the peak of the excitement, the price jumped by as much as 36%.

As a result, $SHIB settled at $0.00000540. Supported by a massive trading volume of $700 million, its market capitalization climbed to $3,179,718,980, bringing the asset back to around 25th place in CoinMarketCap's global rankings.

However, it is important to apply cold calculation here and not confuse cause with effect. The hundreds of millions of burned tokens are physically incapable of moving the coin's price. They represent a microscopic drop in an endless ocean, as $SHIB's total supply still stands at an astronomical 589,159,143,761,521 tokens.

Speaking on The Peter Schiff Show Podcast, the economist and longtime Bitcoin critic said the AI trade cracked open this week even as broader indexes held up. Alphabet fell 10% after the company announced higher capital spending than investors expected. Oracle dropped nearly 8% on the week and is now down 41% for the year. Meta fell 7.3%, Amazon lost 6.8%, and Microsoft slipped 2.7%, pushing its year to date decline to 19.3%, close to bear market territory.

Schiff said the market’s reaction marks a shift from prior quarters, when hyperscalers announcing bigger artificial intelligence (AI) budgets typically saw their share prices climb. “Investors are now finally starting to question whether or not these investments are in fact going to pay off,” he said.

SpaceX and Tesla Take the Brunt

SpaceX shares dropped another 7.7% during the week and now trade 49% below the stock’s post IPO high. The company’s public float is set to expand from 5% to 40% of shares by the end of the year, a change Schiff explained could add further pressure on the stock.

Tesla fell 18% over the same stretch and sits 35% below its 52 week high. Together, the declines in Tesla and SpaceX cost Elon Musk close to $100 billion in a single week, according to Schiff’s estimates.

A Dot-Com Comparison

The gold proponent and economist compared the roughly three-quarters of a trillion dollars in annual AI capital spending to the buildout that preceded the dot-com crash. He said many of the early internet favorites that investors poured money into eventually went bankrupt without ever recovering their spending. He does not doubt the long term potential of AI, but argued markets are overestimating near term returns on hyperscaler investment.

The financing is intended to cover part of two buildings with eight data halls at the Helios campus. The facilities are planned for 400 megawatts of utility capacity and 260 MW of critical IT capacity, with some proceeds also funding debt-service reserves.
The 9.875% coupon works out to $346.3 million in annual interest, paid in cash every Feb. 1 and Aug. 1 starting in 2027. The first payment covers only part of a year, but Galaxy has not disclosed the exact amount.

Repayment starts when construction ends

Principal repayment runs on a different schedule. The notes are due to amortize at 4% of original principal each year, subject to adjustment. That equals $140.28 million annually before adjustments, paid in semiannual installments, with the first payment date at least 10 months after project completion.
Interest starts on a fixed schedule, while principal repayments wait until construction is complete and can be adjusted. Creditors will hold first-priority claims on nearly all project assets and the parent company’s stake in the issuer.

The disclosed liens cover Galaxy Helios Data Centers II LLC, its project guarantor and the parent-held equity in the issuer. They do not extend to Galaxy Digital’s assets generally.

CoreWeave committed to approximately 260 MW of incremental critical IT load for Phase II in April 2025. Galaxy described the terms as substantially similar to its previously announced 15-year, 133 MW Phase I agreement.
