Anniversary Stacks Bitcoin Staking Upgrade Vote Passes With 99%, Muneeb Says

The Stacks community approved SIP-045, the Bitcoin Staking upgrade, with more than 99% of votes cast in favor, Stacks co-creator Muneeb Ali said, setting up a hard fork targeted for around July 29 at roughly Bitcoin block 907,740.

The upgrade, formally "PoX-5: Bitcoin Staking and Emission Schedule Alignment," lets participants lock $BTC in a timelocked contract on Bitcoin's base layer - under their own keys - and pair it with locked $STX to earn yield paid in bitcoin. A companion proposal, SIP-044, which brings Clarity 6 and new staking post-conditions, passed alongside it. Voting opened July 6; hard-fork votes require at least 80% approval from stacked $STX.

"Bitcoin is the world's most trusted asset precisely because of its design and safety principles on the L1," Ali said when the Bitcoin Staking whitepaper was published in May. "Holders can now earn yield denominated in $BTC, trustlessly, while their Bitcoin stays exactly where it belongs.'

How the Mechanism Works

Stakers fund a timelocked UTXO on Bitcoin using OP_CHECKLOCKTIMEVERIFY, pair it with an $STX lock equal to at least 5% of the bond, and commit for roughly six months. The Stacks contract verifies the Bitcoin-side lock with an SPV proof - no custodian or trusted bridge. Yield

A Quantum Computer Could One Day Break Crypto Security — Coinbase Is Preparing NowCoinbase Warns Crypto’s Protection Could Eventually Break
Crypto exchange Coinbase (Nasdaq: COIN) has started preparing its custody systems and infrastructure for a future in which powerful quantum computers could defeat the cryptography protecting Bitcoin, Ethereum and other blockchain networks.

Coinbase Chief Information Security Officer Jeff Lunglhofer outlined the company’s position in a July 23 company blog post:

“A large-scale quantum computer capable of breaking current cryptography will eventually be built. No one knows exactly when. But the work to prepare needs to start now, not when it’s urgent.”

The company said its Independent Advisory Board on Quantum Computing and Blockchain has high confidence that a fault-tolerant quantum computer will eventually be developed. Coinbase formed the board to assess long-term quantum risks facing digital assets, according to Coinbase’s quantum advisory board announcement.

“The cryptography that secures virtually every major blockchain is vulnerable when it arrives. The threat is not imminent, but the timeline is genuinely uncertain,” Lunglhofer added.

The warning does not suggest that quantum computers can currently defeat the cryptography securing major blockchains. Instead, Coinbase argues that upgrading global blockchain systems, moving millions of users and replacing vulnerable cryptographic methods could take years, making early preparation essential.

Jordi Visser, a veteran of the macrofinance world, stated that the era of rapid 7-8 fold gains in the AI sector has stalled, and claimed that global capital and market dynamics will shift to Bitcoin and digital assets in the next major wave.

In a period where the growth rate of the AI rally has shifted gears due to capital expenditures (capex) and hardware bottlenecks, attention has once again turned to macroeconomic balances and the cryptocurrency market. Speaking on Anthony Pompliano’s show, Jordi Visser, a macro investor with over 30 years of experience and founder of AI Macro Nexus / AI22 Research, argued that the “easy money” era in AI is over and that it’s Bitcoin’s turn in capital rotation.

Jordi Visser pointed out that the aggressive valuations seen in AI infrastructure investments and large language models (LLMs) have reached saturation point. Stating that the high interest rate environment and physical hardware limitations such as chip and memory shortages are putting pressure on company margins, Visser made the following assessment:

“The ‘easy money’ trading model, where massive returns of 7-8 times the initial investment were achieved through AI, has come to an end. This doesn’t mean AI is dead; however, we’ve now entered a period of grueling and rational growth, typically around 30% annually. Capital is now seeking new avenues in terms of risk-return balance.”

Visser noted that giants like Google and Anthropic are burning significant capital trying to build infrastructure, but profitability is delayed due to physical limitations, which he said would drive investors towards alternative macro assets.
