Bitcoin ($BTC) and altcoins surged this week following news of a ceasefire between the US and Iran. While $BTC was rejected for the third time at $73,000, a CryptoQuant analyst analyzed the reasons behind the recent surge.

CryptoQuant senior analyst Julio Moreno stated that the recent price increase in Bitcoin ($BTC) and Ethereum ($ETH) was not solely due to the liquidation of short positions.

Moreno stated that the rise was supported not only by short liquidation but also by investors actively opening new long positions.

A CryptoQuant analyst noted that following the US-Iran ceasefire announcement, open positions in $BTC and $ETH perpetual futures each increased by over $2 billion in 24 hours, indicating a new upward trend.

“The simultaneous increase in these two major assets, Bitcoin and Ethereum, reflects positioning based on macroeconomic events.”

Investors are ahead of the expected improvement in overall risk perception. More importantly, open positions have increased significantly for both assets. This confirms that the liquidation of short positions is not the primary factor and that investors are opening net new long positions.”

Furthermore, the market buy-ask ratio for both $BTC and $ETH rose above 1, indicating that buying pressure was dominant.

The Coinbase Premium Index, a reflection of US demand, also moved positively for both assets. This means that demand from US investors is also increasing.

At this point, the analyst concluded that as long as the ceasefire remains in place, demand from the US will continue to support higher prices.

“If the ceasefire holds and no news emerges that could escalate tensions in the next two weeks, Coinbase premium could remain in positive territory and strengthen the bullish price trend.”

According to SoSoValue, Bitcoin spot ETFs saw a net outflow of $124 million yesterday. BlackRock’s IBIT saw a net inflow of $40.38 million.

Fidelity’s FBTC led the outflows with $79.12 million, while Ark’s ARKB saw a net outflow of $74.70 million. Grayscale’s GBTC saw a net outflow of $11.10 million. 

The total net asset value of Bitcoin Spot ETFs is $91.90 billion, which is 6.43% of all BTC supply. The historical cumulative net inflow stands at $56.15 billion.

When we talk about “risk” in crypto, the real and often underestimated risk lies in security.

Through its Office of Cybersecurity and Critical Infrastructure Protection (OCCIP), the program will share timely cyber threat information with eligible crypto and blockchain firms to help them prevent and respond to attacks.

Interestingly, the timing of this initiative feels almost deliberate.

Just four months into 2026, the crypto market has already faced another reminder of its security gaps. The recent Drift Protocol attack exposed vulnerabilities within the platform’s trading mechanisms, resulting in losses estimated at around $285 million. This disparity stems largely from how each network handles public key exposure. In particular, analysts note that XRP minimizes exposure more effectively, which could translate into stronger long-term security.

Additionally, XRP incorporates built-in safeguards such as key rotation systems and escrow time-lock mechanisms. Together, these features enhance its resilience against advanced threats. In contrast, Bitcoin does not provide these protections natively.
Meanwhile, in Hong Kong, authorities have taken a significant step toward formalizing the stablecoin market.

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has granted stablecoin issuer licenses to Standard Chartered and HSBC under the newly implemented Stablecoins Ordinance, with approvals taking immediate effect.

Both institutions are expected to roll out stablecoins in the second half of 2026, targeting use cases such as cross-border payments, domestic transactions, and digital asset trading.

HKMA Chief Executive Eddie Yue described the move as a key milestone, emphasizing the importance of balancing innovation with user protection and risk management. Deputy Chief Executive Daryl Ho added that future licenses will be issued cautiously and in limited numbers.
