Banks challenge White House report on stablecoin yields



The American Bankers Association (ABA) has criticized a White House report that claimed banning stablecoin yields would only have a negligible impact on banks, arguing that the conclusion was reached by asking the “wrong question.”

The White House’s Council of Economic Advisers claimed in a research paper on Wednesday, on the “Effects of Stablecoin Yield Prohibition on Bank Lending,” that under a baseline scenario, banning stablecoin yield may only increase bank lending by $2.1 billion, representing a marginal net increase of about 0.02%.

ABA chief economist Sayee Srinivasan and vice president for banking and economic research Yikai Wang said in a statement on Monday that the “live policy concern” is not whether prohibiting yield on stablecoins would impact bank lending but whether allowing yield on stablecoins would encourage deposit outflows, particularly from community banks.

Srinivasan and Wang said that even if total deposits in the banking system remain unchanged, more funds would likely move from smaller banks to large institutions, which would raise the funding costs of community banks and reduce local lending.

Some of these smaller banks may not have enough balance sheet flexibility to absorb these outflows without resorting to higher-cost wholesale borrowing, the pair said.

RaveDAO’s $RAVE token, a little-known project until last week, has burst onto the scene in dramatic fashion.

It is now the third-largest cryptocurrency behind bitcoin and ether (ETH) – not by market capitalization, but by liquidations or forced closures of leveraged futures bets by exchanges.

In the past 24 hours, exchanges have liquidated $44 million worth of $RAVE futures positions, the majority of which were bearish (short) bets, according to data source Coinglass. By comparison, liquidations in bitcoin and ether stood at $229 million and $135 million, respectively.

$RAVE’s outsized liquidations follow an extraordinary rally, with the token surging roughly 4,500% in seven days and lifting its market capitalization from about $60 million to $2.8 billion. To put that into perspective, the value of liquidations over the past 24 hours alone is roughly equivalent to the token’s entire market cap just a week ago. This highlights the intensity of the price surge and the degree of speculative activity driving it.

RaveDAO markets itself as a Web3-based music platform that aims to merge EDM culture with blockchain tools, including on-chain ticketing, crypto payments at events, and staking tied to live show revenues. It also highlights supposed collaborations with major exchanges like Binance and OKX, along with claims of multi-million-dollar revenue to strengthen its story of real-world adoption.

Liquidations occur when the market moves against a trader’s position, eroding their margin. If the trader fails to add collateral, the exchange forcibly closes the position.

Short squeeze

A wave of liquidations in $RAVE, particularly on short positions, suggests the rally is being driven by a short squeeze, where forced unwinding of bearish bets is amplifying upward price momentum. Of the total tally of $43.25 million, over $32 million were short bets.

A new operational challenge faces the Solana ecosystem after it was confirmed that entities linked to FTX and Alameda Research unstaked a multi-million dollar sum. This move injects liquidity into the market at a time when the asset is struggling to maintain its bullish structure.

At the time of writing, Solana was trading near $86, following a cumulative drop of 41% over the last three months. Technically, the Spot Netflow recorded a drastic decline of 22,251%, sitting at -$8.9 million, reflecting a latent but absorbed selling pressure.

For investors, this behavior is not new, as previous unstaking events by these entities had a minimal impact on the price. However, aggressive accumulation in the spot market suggests that traders are attempting to establish a solid floor.

Market Analysis and Technical Projections

According to trend indicators, the market remains within a bearish structure, with a modified DMI that has stayed in negative territory since late March. This technical configuration warns of the possibility that the asset could visit lower levels in the short term.

If this weakness persists, Solana will likely break the $80 support to seek liquidity in the $78 zone. However, market sentiment remains divided between institutional capitulation and retail accumulation.

Despite the headwinds, the network maintains over 364 million $SOL in direct staking, demonstrating remarkable infrastructure resilience. The spot outflow volume of $141.3 million compared to $132.3 million in inflows confirms buying interest.
