Bitcoin futures open interest on the CME has fallen to a 14-month low of approximately $7.2 billion in early April, extending a five-month decline as the basis trade that drove institutional demand unwinds and the Crypto Fear and Greed Index sits at 12, deep inside extreme fear territory for the 46th consecutive day.

As KuCoin’s daily market report noted, the basis trade was the central engine of institutional Bitcoin exposure after US spot ETFs launched in 2024. For much of 2024 and 2025, the strategy offered a relatively low-risk yield from the spread between futures and spot prices. As bitcoin fell from its high of $120,000 to below $70,000, that spread compressed sharply, making the trade uneconomical against the current risk-free rate. The result is a sustained institutional pullback from CME that shows up directly in both open interest and monthly volume figures.

The Fear and Greed Index reading of 12 reflects a market where retail sentiment has been suppressed for longer than at any comparable point since late 2022.

Tron (CRYPTO: ) founder Justin Sun escalated his attack on the Trump family-backed World Liberty Financial ($WLFI) platform on Monday, claiming its governance structure is “hollowed from the inside.”

Sun Accuses $WLFI Of Power Centralization

In an X post, Sun alleged that only one person in the company has the “unilateral power to freeze any token holder’s assets.”

Drawing on the analysis by on-chain sleuth banteg, Sun said that a single guardian externally owned account last year.

Note that certain addresses are given “guardian” roles in token contracts. These guardians have admin privileges, including the ability to call a blacklist function.

Additionally, Sun alleged that seizing assets requires a 3-of-5 multisig vote, meaning that the proposal must be signed and approved by at least three out of five designated authorized key holders.

“Every proposal, every vote, every claim of decentralized decision-making is theater,” Sun said. “The entire governance framework has been hollowed out from the inside.”

Sun Demands Transparency

He called on the company to reveal the identity of the individuals, adding, “Every investor has the right to know who holds the power to freeze their assets.”

World Liberty Financial and Sun didn’t immediately return Benzinga’s request for a comment.

The New Crypto Flashpoint

World Liberty Financial accused Sun of making "baseless allegations" to mask his own wrongdoings and threatened legal action.

Sun’s wallet was blacklisted last year following a transfer of $WLFI worth more than $9 million to an unknown address.

X Money to open early public access this month

It’s unclear what “something” refers to, as Bier did not provide any further details. There is speculation that it may be tied to X Money, a payments service integrated into X to support peer-to-peer transfers, digital wallets, and extensive financial tools.

Elon Musk has confirmed that early access to X Money is coming this month after completing internal testing and an external beta.

Comparable to Venmo or PayPal, the service is expected to support Musk’s goal of developing X into an everything app. It includes payments, cards, and account management features.

Crypto integration is not currently included. However, former CEO Linda Yaccarino previously said that X planned to introduce investment and trading features as part of a push to turn the platform into a combined financial and social ecosystem. That suggests digital assets may be considered in future updates.

X removes bot networks at scale in push to clean up platform

X has recently intensified efforts to combat bots, introducing stricter detection methods and rapidly suspending accounts across the platform.

Crypto-related accounts have been bearing the brunt of the purge, as the company targets spam and coordinated promotion.
