On April 19, 2026, a $293 million hack of KelpDAO triggered a chain reaction that sent shockwaves through the DeFi ecosystem, with AAVE being hit hard. Around 116,500 rsETH—roughly 18% of the token’s circulating supply was stolen from KelpDAO in an elaborate cyber attack, and now the whole decentralized lending economy is reeling from its aftershocks. The attacks were reportedly carried out by the North Korean Lazarus Group and funded through the notorious mixer Tornado Cash.The trouble didn’t end with the KelpDAO hack, as a popular influencer commented:The stolen rsETH was immediately deposited as collateral on Aave’s DeFi markets. Attackers borrowed roughly $236 million in wrapped ETH (WETH) and other assets, leaving Aave with an estimated $177–200 million in unbacked “bad debt”. This, in turn, triggered widespread panic among AAVE users, many of whom rushed to withdraw their funds. However, the sudden frenzy has resulted in delayed/canceled withdrawals and a general state of helplessness among DeFi users.AAVE’s Total Value Locked (TVL) plummeted by $6.6–8.45 billion within 48 hours, dropping from around $26 billion to roughly $18 billion, according to DeFiLlama data. The token itself corrected sharply by 15–20%, reflecting widespread lack of confidence right now. It remains to be seen whether it can bounce back from this major drop or continue its free fall.On-chain analytics CryptoQuant tweeted:A total of 355,000 AAVE (approximately $32 million) was deposited on cryptocurrency exchanges in the immediate aftermath of this episode, CryptoQuant reported. The recent $290M rsETH exploit tied to KelpDAO has sparked concern across the market—but the deeper analysis from LayerZero and Aave tells a more nuanced story.
First, this was not a failure of the LayerZero protocol itself.
According to their findings, the root cause was KelpDAO’s decision to run rsETH with a single-DVN (1-of-1) configuration—essentially relying on one verifier instead of a decentralized, redundant system. That choice created a critical vulnerability.
What makes this attack particularly alarming is its sophistication. Rather than directly breaching core infrastructure, the attacker reportedly poisoned RPC endpoints, replaced node binaries, and used DDoS pressure to force failover into compromised systems. From there, they executed an RPC spoofing attack to forge messages—while staying under the radar by feeding normal data to monitoring systems.
Even so, LayerZero maintains that proper architecture could have prevented this entirely. A multi-DVN setup, requiring consensus across independent verifiers, would have made the attack ineffective.
There’s also a geopolitical layer: early indicators suggest involvement from a state-linked group, possibly North Korea’s Lazarus/TraderTraitor actors—highlighting how advanced crypto threats have become.
On the bright side, contagion appears contained.
LayerZero confirmed no impact on other integrated applications, and Aave stated that rsETH remains fully backed, although markets are temporarily frozen as a precaution.

A recent University of Oxford Faculty of Law study found sharp swings in global markets following rapid changes in U.S. tariff policy, including a sequence in which prices across crypto and stock markets fell after new tariffs were announced, then rebounded after Trump partially rolled them back days later.

The scale and timing of those moves, the author noted, created “fantastic trading opportunities” for anyone with advanced knowledge of the decisions. Also, those back-and-forth decisions by Trump have been widely criticized and called the Trump Again Chickens Out (TACO) dynamic.

The issue gained further attention after Trump posted “THIS IS A GREAT TIME TO BUY!! on Truth Social in April 2025 shortly before announcing a tariff adjustment that sent markets higher, prompting calls from lawmakers, including Senator Adam Schiff, for an investigationinto potential insider trading or market manipulation.

Analysts, experts and media reports have highlighted patterns of large, well-timed trades across commodities and prediction markets, in some cases placed minutes before major policy or military announcements.

Since 2019, BRICS’ share of global gold reserves has climbed from 11.2% to 17.4% as of April 2026. And the pace picked up sharply after 2022. The reason is simple but powerful: trust and control over reserves.
When roughly $300 billion of Russia’s foreign reserves were frozen, it sent a clear message to the world—assets held abroad can become inaccessible overnight. Gold, especially when stored domestically, doesn’t carry that same risk.
But this isn’t just about defense—it’s also about building something new.
BRICS is actively exploring a gold-linked trade settlement system called the “Unit”, composed of 40% gold and 60% member currencies, with each unit tied to one gram of gold. This isn’t a cryptocurrency—it’s a new financial instrument aimed at reshaping cross-border trade.
At the same time, BRICS nations already hold a major advantage:
they account for roughly 50% of global gold production and over half of sovereign gold purchases in recent years.
Zooming out, a bigger trend is forming:
de-dollarization and gold accumulation are moving in parallel.
Central banks globally are reinforcing this shift:
73% expect the dollar’s share of reserves to decline further
43% plan to increase gold holdings
None are planning to reduce gold exposure
The dollar still dominates at around 57% of global reserves—but that’s down significantly from 71% in 1999.
The takeaway?
Gold is no longer just a hedge—it’s becoming a strategic pillar in a changing financial order.
This isn’t a short-term trade. It’s a long-term structural shift.
And BRICS is positioning itself right at the center of it.

Thursday brought just $26 million, and Monday registered a $291 million outflow. That volatility in daily flows suggests opportunistic accumulation rather than a steady institutional drip.

IBIT’s $612 million weekly haul pushed its market cap to $159.22 billion, placing it among the world’s largest ETFs by assets. Fidelity’s FBTC also contributed meaningfully to inflows, while Grayscale’s GBTC continued to bleed – a split that reflects sustained conviction in lower-fee products and residual exit pressure from legacy holders.

U.S. institutions captured 96.4% of global crypto product inflows last week, absorbing $1.06 billion of a $1.1 billion global total. That concentration matters: it signals that Bitcoin demand is increasingly centralized in regulated U.S. vehicles, making ETF flow data the most reliable leading indicator for near-term BTC price direction.

If weekly inflows sustain above $750 million, BTC’s support floor around current levels strengthens materially. If flows revert toward the $200–$300 million range seen during January’s plateau, the bid thins out fast.

Ethereum spot ETFs pulled in $275 million net last week, XRP ETFs added $11.75 million, and Solana shed $5.6 million; this was selective altcoin rotation, not a broad risk-on flush.
