Aave’s total value locked plunged by about $6.6 billion and its token fell 16% after attackers used $292 million in stolen rsETH from Kelp’s bridge as collateral on Aave V3.

The exploit, which did not compromise Aave’s own contracts, left roughly $196 million in Aave-specific bad debt concentrated in the dominant rsETH–wrapped ether pair on Ethereum.

Aave’s Umbrella reserve may not fully cover the deficit, raising the prospect that stkAAVE holders could absorb losses and underscoring systemic risks from liquid restaking tokens across DeFi.

Alcoa is in advanced discussions to sell its Massena East smelter site in upstate New York to New York Digital Investment Group (NYDIG).  Summary Alcoa is in advanced talks to sell Massena East smelter site to NYDIG. NYDIG aims to expand Bitcoin mining operations using hydropower-linked industrial infrastructure in New York. Massena East site has been idle since 2014 and spans about 1,300 acres. The update was shared by Alcoa chief executive Bill Oplinger in comments reported on Friday. Oplinger stated that the transaction “should be done in the middle part of this year” if the process continues as planned. The site is part of a wider effort by Alcoa to offload around 10 idle US smelter properties. It has been inactive since 2014 after high energy costs and global competition reduced domestic production viability. Bitcoin Mining Firm Expands Industrial Footprint NYDIG, a Bitcoin financial services company, would become the owner of the site if the deal is completed. The firm has already been active at the location through its partnership with Coinmint. NYDIG took a strategic stake in Coinmint in October 2024. Coinmint operates Bitcoin mining hardware at the Massena campus under a long-term lease agreement signed with Alcoa in 2018. The facility has access to hydropower from the New York Power Authority, which supports large-scale mining operations. The site has also been used as a hosting location for mining infrastructure over recent years. Additionally, Coinmint has hosted mining equipment for several firms, including CleanSpark, Gryphon, and Bit Digital. Some of these clients exited as NYDIG increased its operational role at the site. ZhiDongXi reported on April 18th that OpenAI experienced a series of changes early this morning, including executive departures, project downsizing, and allegations of a conflict of interest involving co-founder and CEO Sam Altman. This star AI company, poised for an IPO, is once again facing a personnel and trust crisis.

On one hand, several executives, including Bill Peebles, the core head of Sora, and Chief Product Officer Kevin Weil, have officially announced their departures. Projects such as the video project Sora and the research tool Prism are facing shutdowns, mergers, or restructuring.

On the other hand, the Wall Street Journal revealed that Sam Altman attempted to push OpenAI to support his personal bets on nuclear fusion and space projects. This move has once again embroiled the company in conflict of interest allegations at a crucial juncture when it is valued at approximately $850 billion (about 5.8 trillion yuan) and preparing for its IPO.

Early this morning, Bill Peebles, the core leader of the Sora project, officially announced his departure on social media, posting a photo of himself working alongside Sam Altman.

In his open letter, Bill reviewed the development process of Sora from scratch, calling building the project with the team the "most glorious and adventurous" experience of his career. Aave's TVL tanks $8B a day after $293M Kelp DAO hack

Total value locked on decentralized lending protocol Aave dropped by nearly $8 billion over the weekend after hackers behind the $293 million Kelp DAO exploit borrowed funds on Aave, leaving roughly $195 million in “bad debt” on the protocol and triggering withdrawals.

Data from DeFiLlama shows that Aave’s TVL fell from about $26.4 billion to $18.6 billion by Sunday, losing the top spot as the largest DeFi protocol.

Aave v3’s lending pools for USDt ($USDT) and $USDC ($USDC) are now at 100% utilization, meaning that more than $5.1 billion worth of stablecoins cannot be withdrawn until new liquidity arrives or borrows are repaid.

Aave’s TVL fall shows how rapidly risk from a single security incident can spread throughout the broader, interconnected DeFi lending market, potentially leading to a severe liquidity crisis.

The incident began on Saturday when hackers stole 116,500 Kelp DAO Restaked ETH (rsETH) tokens worth about $293 million from Kelp DAO’s LayerZero-powered bridge and used them as collateral on Aave v3 to borrow wrapped Ether (wETH).

Crypto analytics platform Lookonchain said the move created about $195 million in “bad debt” on Aave, which contributed to the Aave (AAVE) token tanking nearly 20% from $112 on Saturday at 6:00 pm UTC to $89.5 about 25 hours later.

Lookonchain noted that some of the largest crypto whales to withdraw funds from Aave were the MEXC crypto exchange and Abraxas Capital at $431 million and $392 million, respectively.
