Balaji calls for more ‘crypto tools’ for refugees amid Middle East tensions

Tech investor and former Coinbase chief technology officer Balaji Srinivasan has called on the crypto industry to develop more financial tools for refugees and stateless people.

In a Saturday post on X, Srinivasan said the number of displaced individuals could grow as global conflicts intensify and economic migration increases. He pointed to examples ranging from Ukrainians fleeing war to workers leaving the Gulf countries amid regional tensions.

“We should build more crypto tools for refugees and stateless people,” Srinivasan wrote, suggesting that blockchain-based systems can provide financial infrastructure when traditional institutions fail or become inaccessible.

Srinivasan described crypto as “wartime mode for the internet,” arguing that decentralized networks were designed to operate even under hostile conditions such as cyberattacks, infrastructure failures or financial restrictions. He said that public blockchains can continue processing transactions even if centralized systems face disruptions.

Crypto rarely builds for refugees despite clear need

His comments came in response to a separate post from Andi Duro, founder of research site TwoCents, who argued that while crypto could serve refugees effectively, the industry rarely builds products specifically for them.

“It’s very unfortunate that crypto is a great solution for refugees who are stateless and forced to interact with crumbling institutions and payment rails,” Andi wrote. “But nobody in crypto builds for refugees because they’re not useful consumers for gambling.”

On Friday, Bloomberg reported that HSBC, Hong Kong’s largest bank by assets, and a joint venture led by Standard Chartered are set to be among the first companies to receive the Hong Kong Monetary Authority’s (HKMA) stablecoin licenses this month.

Authorities are reportedly prioritizing institutions already authorized to issue banknotes and will approve the two banks in the first batch, according to people familiar with the matter. Notably, the HKMA favors bank-led stablecoin issuers due to their robust capital base and ability to ensure greater safety while facilitating wider adoption, the sources affirmed.

Last month, the financial authority’s Chief Executive, Eddie Yue, announced it would grant the first, limited batch of stablecoin provider licenses in March as the review of 36 applications was nearly completed.

The HKMA enacted the Stablecoins Ordinance last August, which directs any individual or entity seeking to issue any fiat-referenced stablecoin (FRS) in Hong Kong, or any Hong Kong Dollar (HKD)-denominated token, to obtain a license from the financial regulator.

The number of licenses and the timetable had not yet been finalized and were subject to change. However, sources suggested March 24 as a possible date, as revealed by the South China Morning Post (SCMP), which first broke the news.

Industry sources suggested that Hong Kong’s licensing regime will initially prioritize the local currency. Standard Chartered has already announced plans to issue a Hong Kong dollar-pegged token.

Crypto analyst Doctor Profit has revealed a new long position on $XRP after the asset’s recent pullback.

He argues that the token may be setting up for a short-term rebound despite market uncertainty.

Market data shows $XRP currently trading around $1.40, reflecting a slight 2% decline over the past 24 hours. Meanwhile, the coin is still holding roughly 1.95% gains over the past week.

Analyst Doctor Profit has opened a long $XRP position at $1.34, anticipating a short-term relief rally in the market.

He believes crypto prices may rise briefly before a larger correction, while maintaining both Bitcoin longs and a BTC short.

The analyst says $XRP is “criminally undervalued,” noting its RSI has dropped to levels last seen during the 2022 bear market.

$XRP recently climbed to $1.45 before retracing, with key support between $1.30 and $1.37 as traders watch for a rebound.

In a recent update on X, Doctor Profit outlined his current trading positions across major assets.

According to him, he is holding multiple positions in Bitcoin, including spot buys around $60,000 and $68,000. He is also maintaining a short trade in the $115,000 to $125,000 region.

Alongside these positions, the crypto educator confirmed that he has entered a long trade on $XRP from $1.34. Doctor Profit explained that he expects a temporary upward move across the market before a larger correction eventually unfolds.

Notably, crypto markets have been struggling to regain their footing this year, and ongoing financial tensions from the Middle East conflict are adding to the pressure.

While prices have largely been discouraging, Doctor Profit says a notable relief rally is underway. Hence, he is holding long positions in $XRP and Bitcoin. Meanwhile, he does not expect it to last, as he anticipates a resumption of the downtrend.
