A new experiment by the Bitcoin Policy Institute (BPI) revealed that Bitcoin was the top monetary choice among advanced AI models when acting as autonomous economic agents.

The study tested 36 AI models from major providers including OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, and xAI across 9,072 economic scenarios. Without being given specific currency options, the models independently selected monetary instruments for roles like store of value, medium of exchange, unit of account, and settlement.

Bitcoin dominated the results with 48.3% of total selections, while stablecoins came second with 33.2%. Traditional fiat and bank money accounted for only 8.9%, and none of the AI models ranked fiat as their top overall choice.

Interestingly, the results showed a two-tier monetary structure. Bitcoin was overwhelmingly preferred as a store of value, winning 79.1% of long-term purchasing power scenarios. However, for everyday payments like services, micropayments, and cross-border transfers, stablecoins led with 53.2%.

The experiment also revealed that some AI models proposed alternative monetary units such as energy or computing power (joules, kilowatt-hours, GPU-hours) in certain accounting scenarios.

According to BPI, these findings suggest that as AI agents begin to participate more actively in digital economies, Bitcoin and stablecoin infrastructure could become a critical part of future autonomous financial systems.
