North Korea’s crypto heist playbook is expanding and DeFi keeps getting hit


Less than three weeks after North Korea-linked hackers used social engineering to hit crypto trading firm Drift, hackers tied to the nation appear to have pulled off another major exploit with Kelp.

The attack on Kelp, a restaking protocol tied into LayerZero’s cross-chain infrastructure, suggests an evolution in how North Korea-linked hackers operate, not just looking for bugs or stolen credentials, but exploiting the basic assumptions built into decentralized systems.

Taken together, the two incidents point to something more organized than a string of one-off hacks, as North Korea continues to escalate its efforts to hijack funds from the crypto sector.

“This is not a series of incidents; it is a cadence,” said Alexander Urbelis, chief information security officer and general counsel at ENS Labs. “You cannot patch your way out of a procurement schedule.”

More than $500 million was siphoned across the Drift and Kelp exploits in just over two weeks.

How Kelp was breached

At its core, the Kelp exploit did not involve breaking encryption or cracking keys. The system actually worked the way it was designed to. Rather, attackers manipulated the data feeding into the system and forced it to rely on those compromised inputs, causing it to approve transactions that never actually occurred.

“The security failure is simple: a signed lie is still a lie,” Urbelis said. “Signatures guarantee authorship; they do not guarantee truth.”

In simpler terms, the system checked who sent the message, not whether the message itself was correct. For security experts, that makes this less about a clever new hack and more about exploiting how the system was set up.

“This attack wasn’t about breaking cryptography,” said David Schwed, COO of blockchain security firm SVRN. “It was about exploiti

The nominee to lead the US Federal Reserve, Kevin Warsh, on Tuesday faced criticism and backlash from Democrats questioning his financial disclosures and potential conflicts of interest.

Heading into today’s Senate Banking Committee confirmation hearings, it was clear that the independence of the Fed remains a key issue for many lawmakers concerned about the President Donald Trump’s influence over any Senate-confirmed candidate.

With Jerome Powell’s term as the US Federal Reserve Chair set to expire next month, lawmakers are scrambling replace the long-serving official.

Under questioning from Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, the committee’s ranking member who repeatedly referred to Warsh as a “sock puppet” for the president’s policies, the prospective Fed chair sidestepped answering whether Trump lost the 2020 US election and identifying any issue on which the two disagree.

Warren said confirming Warsh could result in the Fed “granting special accounts to [the Trump family’s] crypto company or bailouts to his friends on Wall Street if they get into trouble” and create “more opportunities for Trump’s corruption.”

Warsh faced similar questions from Rhode Island Senator Jack Reed and other Democrats on his position on lowering interest rates — an action Trump has repeatedly called for and signaled his pick would push if confirmed.

“The president never once asked me to commit to any particular interest rate decision, period, and nor would I ever agree to do so if he had, but he never did,” said Warsh in response to a question from Republican Senator John Kennedy.

XRP continues to trade within a broader corrective trend but is now showing early signs of short-term strength after holding the macro demand zone.

Following the breakdown below $1.71 (0.236 Fib), price found strong support near $1.11 – $1.30 and has since rebounded. XRP is currently consolidating around $1.40 – $1.45, attempting to push higher after a period of tight compression.

While momentum is improving, the overall structure remains corrective unless higher resistance levels are reclaimed.

The recent plunge revealed a dire situation. XLM broke below its uptrend line and the key support level of $0.2527 with increased volume, completely shifting the market structure to bearish.

The broader cryptocurrency market is showing signs of a modest recovery; the global market capitalization reached $5.53 billion, a 1.73% increase in 24 hours, providing XLM with a slight upward momentum. However, whether this is enough to sustain the rebound is a completely different question.

Can XLM cryptocurrency price return to $0.20 this week?

XLM is attempting a rebound, but its structure still looks like a recovery pattern rather than a strong uptrend, as there has been a lack of genuine follow-through buying even as the price approaches the top of the recent range.

The previous decline was accompanied by decreasing volume, a bearish signal, after which we hoped to see strong demand intervention, but this has not yet materialized.

Currently, the price is trapped within a range.  Resistance is around $0.1776 to $0.1830, an area that was previously suppressed by prices. Therefore, a genuine momentum shift is unlikely unless prices decisively break through this area. A break above this area would present a bigger challenge: the previous $0.2527 level, which has now become resistance, and retaking it will not be easy.

On the downside, $0.1640 is a key support level for the entire price action. This level has already been tested, and a break below it would quickly extend the downside due to insufficient support below.

Therefore, the most likely scenario is a sideways consolidation between $0.1640 and $0.1830, awaiting market stabilization after the decline.
