China has long sought to expand the yuan’s role in global finance, and a stablecoin could accelerate offshore adoption in trade corridors where renminbi-denominated settlement already exists. “If there’s currency competition, you want your currency to have the best features possible,” Allaire said. “This is becoming a technological competition,” Reuters reported, citing Allaire. However, Beijing has so far moved in the opposite direction. In February 2026, the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) and seven government agencies banned unauthorized issuance of yuan-linked stablecoins abroad. Authorities argued such tokens could threaten monetary sovereignty.
