Founding partner at Castle Island Ventures Nic Carter has laid out what he sees as three plausible paths for Bitcoin as the industry moves toward post-quantum cryptography: freeze vulnerable early coins, leave them untouched and accept the consequences, or pursue a legal “salvage” process that avoids a protocol-level confiscation.

The debate matters because, in Carter’s framing, roughly 1.7 million BTC in old pay-to-pubkey outputs could become exposed if Bitcoin eventually deprecates elliptic curve signatures and a cryptographically relevant quantum computer arrives.

In a post on X, Carter argued that the Overton window around quantum risk has shifted quickly. What was recently treated as a fringe concern, he wrote, is now increasingly being discussed as an eventual engineering and governance problem for Bitcoin itself. “The thing about the PQ transition is, it’s impossible as a Bitcoiner to claim that this protocol is cutting edge technology if Bitcoin, a monetary system predicated entirely on cryptography, is a laggard,” he wrote, adding that betting the fate of the network on the hope that the technology does not advance would be both reckless and embarrassing.

From there, Carter sketched the upgrade path he expects. After a soft fork, Bitcoin would likely move through an intermediate phase in which users could sign with existing ECC-based schemes or with new post-quantum signatures. Eventually, he wrote, legacy signatures such as ECDSA and Schnorr would be disallowed entirely. That transition, in his telling, is the easy part. The harder question comes later: what to do with coins that never migrate.

He framed that dispute as a clash between two camps already taking shape. On one side are institutions, custodians, exchanges, and fiduciaries that would view a freeze of non-migrated

While the dip is modest, analysts will monitor whether this trend continues in coming months. Adding to the broadly positive picture, total hours worked climbed by 0.5% over the period, pointing to increased productivity and workforce engagement across industries. Taken together, the March employment data paints a picture of an Australian job market that remains fundamentally sound.

Bitcoin ($BTC) is once again wedged between two large liquidation clusters, with leverage stacked just below and above current levels on major derivatives venues. According to the latest liquidation‑levels data from derivatives analytics platform Coinglass, “if $BTC falls below $73,610, the cumulative long liquidation intensity on major CEXs will reach $2.221 billion,” while “if $BTC breaks above $81,264, the cumulative short liquidation intensity on major CEXs will reach $913 million.”

Coinglass explains that its Bitcoin liquidation heatmap and liquidation‑levels indicator are designed to “estimate price ranges where large‑scale liquidation events may occur” by aggregating high‑leverage long and short clusters across futures and perpetual swaps. The firm stresses that the bars on its heatmap represent relative “intensity” rather than an exact dollar amount guaranteed to be wiped out, but notes that once price collides with a dense band, forced selling or buying can “cause sharp price movements and significantly impact traders’ positions.”

In a recent analysis highlighted by crypto.news, Coinglass’ Bitcoin liquidation map showed a similar setup lower down the chart, with a $1.143 billion long wall below $65,000 and a $754 million short pocket above $68,000, creating nearly $1.9 billion of potential forced flow in a narrow band. At that time, the platform described these areas as “sensitivity zones” that can turn a modest 5–7% move into a disproportionate liquidation cascade as exchanges automatically close margined positions.

Grinex Shutdown Raises Questions About Crypto Laundering Tactics

Sanctions pressure continues to test the resilience of crypto networks tied to restricted financial activity. Blockchain intelligence firm Chainalysis on April 17 examined Grinex after the sanctioned exchange suspended operations. The review described the shutdown as a new stress point for infrastructure tied to sanctions evasion.

Grinex claimed a cyberattack cost about 1 billion rubles, or $13.7 million, and published the source and destination addresses involved. Chainalysis then assessed the transfers using on-chain data rather than relying on the exchange’s narrative. The analysis found that the stolen assets were mainly a fiat-backed stablecoin before being moved through a Tron-based decentralized exchange into TRX.

“In the case of the alleged Grinex hack, the stablecoin funds were quickly swapped for a non-freezable token, thereby avoiding the risk of having the stablecoins frozen by the issuer,” the blockchain analytics firm stated, adding:

“This frantic swapping from stablecoins to more decentralized tokens is a hallmark tactic of cybercriminals and illicit actors attempting to launder funds before a centralized freeze can be executed.”
