Ethereum leads DeFi even as activity slumps The overall weakness in the decentralized applications (DApps) industry has led multiple projects to shut down, while the aggregate total value locked (TVL) shrank by 23% in three months. Ethereum's $38 billion decentralized finance (DeFi) TVL represents a 53% market share, signaling institutional investors' preference. Additionally, when including its layer-2 scaling solutions, the Ethereum ecosystem accounts for 43% of decentralized exchange (DEX) volumes. However, Ethereum faces criticism for relatively low 30-day fees of $11 million.

Despite controlled $ETH issuance at 0.8% equivalent annual inflation, the staking reward rate was 2.7%, lower than the US money market yield. Adding to investors' concerns, the publicly listed company BitMine (BMNR US) held $9.3 billion in unrealized losses on its $ETH reserves. The company, led by its Chairman Tom Lee, continues to increase its position.

Even though there is no imminent risk of BitMine being forced to reduce its $ETH holdings, the situation likely deters institutional investors' appetite. More concerningly, US-listed Ether spot exchange-traded funds (ETFs) posted net outflows for six consecutive weeks. Experienced Trader Shares the Level That Must Be Defended Following Bitcoin’s Sharp Drop
Crypto analyst Ali Martinez shared notable technical and on-chain levels for Bitcoin and Ethereum. According to Martinez, the $60,000 region is critical for maintaining the current trend in Bitcoin.

The analyst noted that, according to on-chain data, more than 1.3 million $BTC changed hands between $60,000 and $63,000. Martinez emphasized that this region represents one of the largest volume clusters for Bitcoin, and stated that the $60,587 level should be maintained as short-term support.

According to Martinez, if Bitcoin falls below this support level, the next significant level for the price could be $46,702. The analyst stated that approximately 150,000 $BTC are currently trading in this region. Further down, Martinez noted that the $37,867 level stands out, with 207,000 $BTC changing hands in that area.

Ali Martinez stated that he was monitoring daily closes to see if buyers would defend the volume block around the $60,000 mark.

On the Ethereum side, the analyst noted that ETH is trading below the 200-hour simple moving average. According to Martinez, unless Ethereum regains this level, the $1,580 level can be watched as the next important target.

CFTC fires back after Kentucky targets Polymarket, Kalshi
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission has sued Kentucky in federal court, seeking to stop the state from enforcing gaming laws against federally regulated prediction market operators.

The case names Kentucky Governor Andrew Beshear, Attorney General Russell Coleman, Department of Revenue Commissioner Thomas B. Miller, and the Kentucky Horse Racing and Gaming Corporation as defendants.

The CFTC says Kentucky’s actions conflict with the Commodity Exchange Act, which gives the regulator authority over futures, options, and swaps traded on federally regulated exchanges.

“Kentucky is the latest state attempting to shut down federally-regulated event contracts,” said CFTC Chair Michael Selig.

The agency asked the court for declaratory and injunctive relief. Kentucky says sports-linked contracts need state oversight.

State action targets platforms

Kentucky sued Kalshi, Polymarket, and partners tied to Coinbase, Robinhood, and Webull on June 17. The state said the companies offered sports event contracts without a Kentucky gaming license and without following state rules. It also argued that the products fall under the state’s definition of sports wagering.

The CFTC rejected that view in its complaint. It said Kalshi and Polymarket are designated contract markets under federal oversight. It also said Coinbase, Robinhood, and Webull are registered futures commission merchants that can offer event contracts through partnerships with regulated exchanges.

Moreover, the regulator described the targeted contracts as swaps under federal commodities law.
