The Ethereum Foundation has clarified that it will not reshape itself around community popularity. It argues that its purpose does not include chasing approval from the broader ecosystem.

The Ethereum Foundation is facing a turbulent year after facing an exodus of several staff members. A contributor to the Foundation has taken to X (formerly Twitter) to explain to the community what it stands for, following much debate.  

Another director gone from the Ethereum Foundation? 

On June 22, the Ethereum Foundation experienced its second departure from the top role in just five months when Hsiao-Wei Wang stepped down as co-executive director and board member. Tomasz Stańczak was the first to leave back in February, leaving Bastian Aue as the sole interim director. 

At least eight senior figures have left since January, including researchers and coordinators like Josh Stark, Trent Van Epps, Tim Beiko, and Barnabé Monnot. 

So far, there are varied reasons behind the departures including personal choice, disagreements with company strategies and the company has even claimed that the departures were a deliberate organizational shift. 

Hsiao-Wei Wang, who spent eight years at the Foundation, said a recent break from work helped her realize it was “the right time to step back.” 

However, former researcher Dankrad Feist argued that the departing contributors are leaving due to management issues. Coinbase’s head of engineering, Yuga Cohler, expressed sadness over the “dysfunction at the Ethereum Foundation.”

The Foundation’s interim co-executive director Bastian Aue, who posts as Aerugo on X, stressed that the Foundation will not discuss individual personnel matters publicly but will clarify policy or factual issues if necessary to avoid misleading the public.

Is ‘multi-node’ ETH Labs the answer to ‘shrinking’ Ethereum Foundation?The Ethereum Foundation (EF) is set to reduce its role in shaping the Ethereum network’s future. And new players are now stepping up, with the latest being ETH Labs, created by former EF members.

According to ETH Labs, its main mission is to “make Ethereum the settlement layer of the global economy.” It bills itself as a non-profit research and development (R&D) for the chain and its governance token, ETH.

The new organization is a broad coalition across the Ethereum ecosystem from DeFi builders, venture firms, institutions, researchers, L2 founders, and more.  According to the firm, they’ve come together to “accelerate the next wave of Ethereum adoption.”

To achieve this, the team plans to build new infrastructure and products that the ecosystem needs the most. No details were shared about these products as of press time. But the project added, The new outfit is backed by Tom Lee’s Bitmine, Sharplink, and Joe Lubin (co-founder of Ethereum and Consensys).

The ETH Labs’ update was not entirely a surprise. Tom Lee recently rubbished claims that the Ethereum Foundation (EF) could face a funding crisis in the next 3-9 months. The community was concerned that the speculated crisis could affect even the planned post-quantum upgrade.

Global energy company Chevron has signed a partnership deal with Microsoft to build a dedicated natural gas power facility next to the tech giant’s data center campus in Pecos, Texas, penning a 20-year agreement that could generate up to 2.67 gigawatts of electricity for the data center’s AI workloads.

The “Kilby” energy project will pair one of the largest U.S. energy producers with one of the biggest buyers of data center capacity, continuing the trend of tech companies scrambling to lock down reliable electricity for AI infrastructure. Microsoft expects the Pecos campus to add 2 gigawatts of data center capacity over the next five to seven years, according to Reuters.

Chevron will develop the project alongside investment firm Engine No. 1 and GE Vernova, which will supply the majority of the gas turbines. Caterpillar’s Solar Turbines subsidiary will also provide additional generation capacity. Initial power generation is targeted for 2028, with output scaling to 2.67 gigawatts over time.

Microsoft bets on behind-the-meter power

Microsoft described the data center investment as a multi-billion-dollar commitment that would create more than 6,000 construction jobs and hundreds of permanent operational roles, according to Reuters.

The facility sits “behind the meter”, meaning Chevron will generate all of the electricity on-site instead of feeding it through the regional grid. Chevron New Energies senior commercial manager Deli Cole said the company can “provide reliable, scalable supply in step with accelerating demand” through dedicated power tailored to data center customers, according to Chevron’s newsroom post.
