Market volatility is expected to continue as short-term risk assets have yet to show significant signs of recovery in buying demand. The US Federal Reserve has maintained interest rates at 3.50%-3.75% while signaling a hawkish stance, with the latest rate forecast indicating a potential increase. Nine out of 18 officials predict at least one rate hike this year, and 17 believe inflation risks are tilted to the upside. As a result, the market has adjusted its expectations, with the probability of a rate hike in December rising to 77%. 

In the crypto market, despite a recent increase of 1,587 BTC, buying activity from ETFs and institutions has not shown significant recovery. The market's focus will shift to US PCE data and Middle East negotiation progress, with risk assets likely to remain volatile until capital flows improve. BTC and other cryptocurrencies may experience continued fluctuations in the short term

Bitcoin price has limited downside, likely near bottom, contrarian indicator suggestslf you're wondering just how much lower bitcoin BTC$62,272.98 is likely to drop, the answer, at least according to one historically accurate contrarian indicator, is not much.

That's the conclusion from an indicator that might seem to signal a bearish shift in sentiment but has tended to presage a more bullish outlook.

The indicator is based on two moving averages: Bitcoin's 50-week simple moving average (SMA) and the 100-week average. The 50-week average, representing roughly one year, is very close to dropping below the 100-week line. A shorter-term measure is often seen as a more accurate reflection of recent attitudes, so the cross would trigger what analysts call a "bear cross." At current trajectories, it could happen as soon as next week.

While that might sound scary to bulls, it is potentially positive news.

There have been three such bear crosses in bitcoin's history, and each marked a market bottom, signaling the end of a decline and the beginning of a three-year rally. The impending cross, therefore, suggests the bear market has nearly run its course and the bottom is near.

Critics would argue that three past instances aren't enough to draw a definite conclusion. While that is true, the contrarian record of the bear cross is consistent with the reputation of ultra-long-duration moving averages as "lagging" indicators.

With sentiment collapsing and key technical levels breaking down, investors are now facing a difficult question: why is the crypto market crashing today and is the worse still ahead?

Liquidation Cascade Triggers Market-Wide Selloff

The biggest driver behind today’s decline appears to be the massive liquidation event across derivatives markets. More than $660 million worth of crypto positions were wiped out over the past 24 hours, with long traders suffering the overwhelming majority of losses. Bitcoin and Ethereum accounted for a large portion of these liquidations as leveraged positions were automatically closed.

At the time of writing, Solana was ahead in 24-hour app revenue, generating almost twice as much as Hyperliquid. Now, it may look like a clear win for Solana but for token holders, there’s more.

A large part of Solana’s app revenue goes to the applications built on the network, not directly to $SOL holders. Hence, it’s clear that network activity isn’t translating into direct value for the $SOL token.

Hyperliquid works differently though. Since much of its revenue comes from its own perpetuals exchange, it has a more direct connection to the $HYPE token through buybacks and burns.

$SOL leads Open Interest, but $HYPE isn’t far behind
At press time, $SOL had slightly higher aggregated Open Interest at around $2.16 billion, compared to $HYPE’s $2.06 billion. Traders still seemed to have a little more capital around $SOL contracts.
