 Ethereum has added a new independent research organization backed by Joe Lubin, Bitmine, and Sharplink, bringing together five former Ethereum Foundation researchers.

According to an announcement from Ethlabs, the newly launched nonprofit research group has secured support from Bitmine, Sharplink, Anchorage, Octant, SNZ, and other Ethereum ecosystem

participants.

The organization did not disclose how much funding it has received.

Founded by former senior Ethereum Foundation researchers Ansgar Dietrichs, Barnabé Monnot, Caspar Schwarz Schilling, Josh Rudolf, and Julian Ma, Ethlabs has been created as an independent institution focused on technical research for the Ethereum network. The group said its work will cover areas including settlement speed, network capacity, native asset issuance, cross-chain interoperability and Ethereum's monetary design.

The launch comes as Ethereum's development ecosystem increasingly relies on independent organizations alongside the Ethereum Foundation.

Aztec Reaches L2Beat Stage 2 After Governance Revokes Rollup Contract Ownership



**Deck:** On-chain governance stripped admin control over Aztec's rollup contract, freezing the code in place and clearing the technical bar for L2Beat's top decentralization tier.

Privacy-focused Ethereum layer-2 Aztec said it reached Stage 2 on L2Beat, the highest decentralization rating the rollup tracker assigns. The milestone followed an on-chain governance action that revoked ownership of the rollup contract.

Aztec announced the change Monday afternoon on X. Revoking ownership made the contract code immutable, the network said, leaving no admin able to override the protocol and preserving an escape hatch through which users can always exit. Those three properties map directly to the conditions L2Beat sets for its top tier.

Code Frozen In Place

L2Beat's Stage 2 is the final rung on its maturity ladder, reserved for rollups fully governed by smart contracts rather than a privileged operator. The framework requires an immutable contract with no admin override, a permissionless proof system, and an exit window that lets users withdraw their funds if they object to an upgrade. L2Beat's project page lists Aztec at Stage 2.

Most rollups launch with what L2Beat calls training wheels: a multisig or security council that can pause the chain or push upgrades. Stage 2 removes that backstop. With ownership revoked, Aztec's rollup contract can no longer be changed by its deployers. The escape hatch is the user-side guarantee, a mechanism that lets holders withdraw to Ethereum even if the network's operators stop cooperating.

According to the company’s assessment, a significant portion of Bitcoin’s past bear markets coincided with periods when the US Dollar Index (DXY) recovered from its lows and entered an upward trend. Analysts emphasized that risky assets generally come under pressure during periods when the dollar gains strength in global markets, and Bitcoin is significantly affected by this situation.

South Korea has seen cryptocurrency-based overseas remittances climb 380% in the past three years, outpacing growth in traditional bank transfers as financial institutions increase their focus on blockchain-powered payment services.

South Korean banks are expanding their focus on stablecoins and blockchain payments as the country prepares to launch a regulated virtual asset transfer framework in December.








According to a SBS Biz report, remittances processed through South Korea’s five largest won-denominated cryptocurrency exchanges rose from 34.02 trillion won ($26.2 billion) in 2022 to 163.55 trillion won ($125.8 billion) last year. The figures were cited from data provided by the office of Congressman Kim Sang-hoon.



The report showed that foreign currency remittances handled by the country’s five major commercial banks reached 1.108 trillion dollars in 2025. Based on the annual average exchange rate, that amounted to about 1,590 trillion won. In 2022, the same banks processed 1.009 trillion dollars, equivalent to roughly 1,318 trillion won, resulting in growth of about 20% over the three-year period.



Hwang Seok-jin, a professor at Dongguk University’s Graduate School of International Information Protection, told SBS Biz that lower transaction costs may have encouraged consumers to use cryptocurrency platforms instead of banks for overseas transfers.
