Franklin Templeton launches dedicated crypto division after closing 250 Digital acquisition


The new unit arrives amid rapid growth in tokenized assets, with Franklin Templeton's onchain product suite expanding from roughly $768 million to more than $2.5 billion over the past year.$Global asset manager Franklin Templeton has completed its acquisition of crypto asset manager 250 Digital, closing a deal first announced in April and expanding its digital asset business with a new division focused on cryptocurrency investing.

As part of the transaction, Franklin Templeton absorbed 250 Digital's investment team and cryptocurrency strategies into a newly created division called Franklin Crypto. The unit will be led by former 250 Digital executives Christopher Perkins and Seth Ginns alongside Franklin Templeton digital assets executive Tony Pecore.

The acquisition follows CoinFund's decision earlier this year to spin out its liquid strategies business into 250 Digital as the crypto investment firm sharpened its focus on venture investing.

Franklin Templeton said Franklin Crypto will offer institutional investors actively managed cryptocurrency strategies, combining the investment capabilities of the former 250 Digital team with the asset manager's global distribution network. The company did not disclose the financial terms of the acquisition.

The new division builds on the asset manager's existing digital asset business, which includes a dedicated unit focused on digital asset research, portfolio construction and institutional risk management. Franklin Templeton manages approximately $1.78 trillion in assets and operates in more than 35 countries, according to the company.

Bitcoin has reclaimed the $65,000 level after the U.S. Treasury temporarily authorized Iranian oil sales amid progress in talks with Tehran.

According to data from crypto.news, Bitcoin ($BTC) climbed more than 3.5% from an intraday low of $63,231 to a high of $65,468 on Monday, June 22, before easing to around $65,000 at press time. The asset’s recovery came as investors responded to signs of improving geopolitical conditions and falling energy prices.

In a statement released on June 22, the U.S. Treasury announced a General License allowing the production, delivery, and sale of crude oil, petroleum products, and petrochemicals of Iranian origin through Aug. 21, 2026.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent linked the decision to recent diplomatic developments in Switzerland. Bessent stated that ongoing talks had been productive and noted that Iran had committed to maintaining free transit through the Strait of Hormuz while also permitting inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency to return to the country.

A group of former Ethereum Foundation researchers formed Ethlabs, a nonprofit geared towards ETH’s next phase of growth.

Bitmine, Sharplink and Ethereum co-founder Joe Lubin have funded the new group.

The move comes amid public criticism of the Ethereum Foundation, which has seen a bevy of notable departures in recent months.
Former Ethereum Foundation researchers have launched Ethlabs, a nonprofit backed by Ethereum co-founder Joe Lubin as well as the two largest ETH treasury firms, Bitmine Immersion Technologies and SharpLink, to help prepare the network for its "next phase" of institutional adoption.

"As stablecoins, tokenized real-world assets, funds and autonomous AI commerce move onchain, they are converging on Ethereum," according to a statement. "Ethlabs exists to ensure the network is ready to absorb that demand at scale, advancing a faster Ethereum with trustworthy interoperability, so institutions building on Ethereum can do so with the neutrality, resilience, privacy and security they require."

Ethlabs' launch could eventually play a major role in how the Ethereum ecosystem evolves in the years to come. While the Ethereum Foundation has historically been the network's primary backer and coordinator of research, with the formation of Ethlabs, both significant ETH holders and ecosystem contributors have come together to form an independent organization tasked with shaping the network's future.

Five former senior Ethereum Foundation researchers co-founded Ethlabs, according to Monday's statement. The researchers are "technologists who have guided the network through its most consequential upgrades over the past decade," Ethlabs also said.

This is according to a recent market exposition by Celal Küçüker, a well-respected crypto analyst, on the back of XRP’s discouraging response to bearish pressure since the fourth quarter of 2025.

Notably, data confirms that after XRP hit a high of 0.000030680 BTC in July 2025 amid its surge to the $3.6 all-time high, the altcoin collapsed against Bitcoin and has since continued to underperform in respect to the premier cryptocurrency.

Groq raised $650 million to expand its inference cloud business six months after licensing its semiconductor technology to Nvidia and losing its founder.

The funding round was led by Disruptive and Infinitum. Groq’s press announcement said existing investors also participated.

The company did not disclose a new valuation. Groq was valued at $6.9 billion after its September $750 million fundraising round.

In December 2025, Nvidia signed a non-exclusive licensing agreement for Groq’s language processing unit (LPU) technology, a chip designed specifically for running AI models.

As part of that arrangement, Nvidia hired away Groq co-founder and CEO Jonathan Ross, president Sunny Madra, and other staff.

Nvidia went on to unveil its own hardware system built on the licensed technology, the LPX inference platform, at its GTC conference in March.

Groq has repositioned around its cloud infrastructure business. The company runs 13 data centers spanning North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific, serving over five million developers and processing trillions of AI tokens per week, per its press release.

The newest inference hardware from Groq, which includes Nvidia’s LPX systems, will be deployed across existing data centers with the assistance of the new capital. Groq stated that its objective is to achieve 200 megawatts of capacity by the end of 2027.
