Bitcoin (BTC) weakness in the first quarter of this year suggests that investors holding large amounts of bitcoin suffered heavy losses.

On the 4th (Korea time), Cointelegraph, citing data from on-chain analytics firm Glassnode, reported that whale investors holding 100 to 10,000 bitcoins realized average daily losses of about $337 million in Q1. This is the largest since the 2022 bear market.

More specifically, investors holding 100 to 1,000 bitcoins logged daily losses of about $188.5 million, while those holding 1,000 to 10,000 bitcoins posted losses of about $147.5 million. Total Q1 losses for these large investors reached about $30.9 billion.

This pattern resembles past bear markets. In fact, after a similar level of losses occurred in Q2 2022, bitcoin plunged more than 50%.

The market is seen as showing signs of “capitulation,” with long-term holders selling even at a loss. Glassnode, however, said this is “a prerequisite for entering a sustainable bull market.”

That move reversed after fresh market pressure, sending Bitcoin down to $65,700 later the same day. Since then, the asset has traded in a narrow range. At press time, Bitcoin's market capitalization stood at about $1.34 trillion, while its market dominance remained near 56.2%. Ethereum held near $2,050 after a slight daily loss, while XRP remained above $1.30. BNB, Solana, TRX, and Cardano all recorded gains of less than 1%. The biggest moves among larger altcoins came from a smaller group of assets. RAIN fell more than 6% and dropped below $0.0075.

From a technical standpoint, the market is officially rolling into Q2. However, to see where it’s headed, we need to check where it’s been. Q1 closed with the total crypto market cap down nearly 21%, extending losses from Q4 2025 when it fell by about 24%.

In just six months, crypto has technically lost over $1.5 trillion. Bitcoin [BTC] hasn’t been spared either, making up 60% of those outflows – A sign that it’s lagging compared to other volatile assets. Backing this, the XAU/BTC ratio closed Q1 up almost 40%, underlining BTC’s relative weakness versus gold.

In short, despite recent optimism around Bitcoin’s “relative” resilience, Q1 revealed crypto was still the weakest performer across asset classes. Against this backdrop, a recent post by U.S President Donald Trump couldn’t have come at a more critical time.

In it, President Trump sounded a warning about a potentially severe attack on Iran’s infrastructure, putting ceasefire expectations on hold. However, more than the content, it’s the “timing” of the post that’s sparked a full-blown market frenzy. Notably, the U.S stock market will remain closed over the weekend, which means the post has temporarily prevented a liquidation cascade.

The real momentum shift, however, is in oil prices. Even before the post, oil had been rattling global markets. Now, the added geopolitical risk layers in more uncertainty. Traders and investors are likely to react as soon as the market reopens, making Monday a highly volatile session for equities.
