The conversation around companies holding Bitcoin has become almost routine: Bitcoin is hard money, fiat currency loses value over time, and companies that keep Bitcoin on their balance sheets are making a rational long-term decision. While all of this is true, it’s not the most interesting question anymore.
The real question is structural: not whether a company should hold Bitcoin, but what kind of company should hold it—and how that choice affects its performance across a full market cycle, not just during favorable conditions.
Three main models have emerged, each reflecting a different level of conviction, capital structure, and trade-offs:
The Pure-Play – A company whose primary purpose is accumulating Bitcoin through capital raises, financial engineering, or similar methods, without a core operating business. This model is lean and singularly focused.
The Digital Credit Issuer – A sophisticated evolution of the pure-play model. These companies issue Bitcoin-backed financial products such as preferred stock or convertible notes to fund ongoing accumulation. At scale, this creates a compounding engine for Bitcoin accumulation that simpler models can’t match.
The Operating Company with a Bitcoin Treasury – A traditional business with real revenue, clients, and operations, which holds Bitcoin as a long-term reserve. The asset is strategically integrated into the company’s broader business plan rather than being the sole focus.
All three models are valid expressions of the Bitcoin treasury thesis, but they serve different purposes. Understanding these differences is more important than most treasury discussions suggest.
Why the Pure-Play Works
The pure-play model deserves serious attention because its strongest version can be highly effective. Financially engineered pure-plays are extremely capital-efficient: every dollar raised goes directly into Bitcoin accumulation, without operational distractions.

Traders are the big winners as 24/7 stocks will finally end the after-hours price 'manipulation'


If the closing bell has long been a business model, then 24/7 trading is an attempt to break it. As the NYSE, Nasdaq, CME and Cboe race to introduce round-the-clock trading, the question is who stands to gain and who could lose.

The answer is quite simple, Mati Greenspan, CEO and founder of Quantum Economics, told CoinDesk: “The biggest losers in 24/7 stock trading won’t be traders: they’ll benefit massively. It'll be the middlemen who’ve long made money when traders can’t trade.”

Greenspan, also a market analyst, alleged that when markets reopen after what he called a big event, “a handful of firms decide the first tradable price. Oftentimes, they will explicitly use a price that triggers stop losses for their clients, closing them out at a loss and making a profit for the broker who is essentially trading against the client.”

When Greenspan was asked whether brokers coordinate around pricing during market closures, he was blunt in his claim: “Yes, manipulation outright.”

“They basically get to control prices, often with hours to strategize," he said. “Often hunting stops losses. When big news happens on weekends, the house tends to take liberties with pricing at the opening bell.”

His comments come as several major U.S. exchanges are looking to offer around-the-clock trading services. The NYSE said it is seeking SEC approval for 24/7 trading. Nasdaq announced similar plans in December. CME plans to roll out 24-hour crypto futures in 2026, pending approval, and Cboe recently expanded U.S. index options to 24/5 trading.

While hitting the Bottom Discovery band does not guarantee an immediate V-shaped recovery, it historically signals that the downside risk is becoming increasingly exhausted relative to the upside potential. "After the FTX saga, Bitcoin's price saw significant gains in Q1 2023, driven by institutional inflows. Talks of spot BTC CTEC boosted trodore back into profits and funlod.

Further downside was possible. Short-term holders were intent on protecting their profits or trying to exit the market at a breakeven, capping the potential of any rally.

Yet, the higher timeframe price action was at an interesting place where a price bounce could not be ruled out completely.

Explaining Bitcoin’s trend expectations

The swing moves on the 3-day timeframe were captured in white. The latest bounce amid the downtrend came in February and was incomplete. There’s a reason why it is considered incomplete.

In October 2025, when the swing structure was bullish, Bitcoin made a double top at $124.4k. This inability to continue the uptrend was an early warning sign of weakness from the bulls.

Subsequently, the swing structure shifted bearishly after the $107.2k low was breached in early November.

Consider the price action since February. The $60k swing low resulted in a bounce that has not climbed above the 50% retracement level.

Many analysts consider the area above the 50% retracement as “premium,” and a move into this area is more likely to result in the next bearish swing move.

The threshold was at $78.9k, and the latest bounce only reached $76k. After this bounce, Bitcoin has not yet climbed below the $60k swing low.

Like the double top in October 2025, Bitcoin’s inability to set new lows in recent weeks was an intriguing development. Consider the $65.9k and $62.9k levels (dotted cyan).
