KRW Stablecoin Infrastructure Goes Live with Maroo
Hashed Open Finance, a fintech subsidiary of global Web3 investment firm Hashed, launched the public testnet of Maroo — a sovereign Layer 1 blockchain designed for Korea’s KRW stablecoin ecosystem. The project is aimed at banks, fintech companies, and AI developers working with won-denominated digital assets.
Maroo is positioned as one of the first public blockchains built around a national currency instead of the U.S. dollar. The infrastructure behind the network already powers BDAN Pocket, a digital wallet connected to the Busan Digital Asset Exchange and used by around 4 million residents in Busan.

The testnet is now available to external developers and financial institutions. Maroo combines a public blockchain structure with built-in compliance tools. The network operates through two modes: an open environment for general users and a regulated path for verified financial activity. Both systems function on the same chain.

A major part of the project is its Programmable Compliance Layer. The system automatically checks transactions for KYC status, transfer limits, blacklist filtering, and other policy requirements before transactions are finalized on-chain. According to the company, this allows compliance rules to work directly at the protocol level instead of relying on manual reviews afterward.

The "Realized Loss" here refers to an indicator that measures, as its name
suggests, the total amount of loss that BTC investors as a whole are realizing through their transactions. If the last selling price was less than the latest one for any token, then that particular token's sale can be considered to be leading to the realization of some net loss. The exact degree of loss involved in the transfer is equal to the difference between the two prices. The Realized Loss calculates the sum of this difference for all loss transactions occurring on the blockchain. The European Union is racing against a self-imposed deadline to implement its side of the existing US-EU trade accord, with the next formal trilogue round set for May 19 in Strasbourg.

Bitcoin's exposure to this trade fight runs through US inflation, Federal Reserve policy, and cross-asset risk appetite.

The European Parliament advanced the implementing legislation on Mar. 26, subject to a sunrise clause tying EU tariff cuts to US compliance, a sunset clause ending concessions on Mar. 31, 2028, and a suspension mechanism if Washington breaches the deal or if US imports surge.

Some EU governments have resisted those conditions as too restrictive, preferring faster implementation with fewer safeguards. Parliament's chief trade negotiator Bernd Lange said on May 7 that there is "still some way to go."

ECB's Lagarde’s digital euro warning: Why Europe shouldn’t just copy the U.S. stablecoin model
European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde argued against the need for privately-issued euro-pegged stablecoins, even in the face of a market which is 98% dominated by dollar-pegged tokens.

Despite the rapid global adoption of USD stablecoins, Largarde argued Europe should focus on building tokenized settlement infrastructure anchored in central bank money rather than simply replicating the U.S. stablecoin model in a speech Bank of Spain’s LatAm Economic Forum in Madrid on Friday

"The case for promoting euro-denominated stablecoins is far weaker than it appears," Lagarde said, arguing that the technological case for stablecoins can be replicated by central bank infrastructure, while their monetary function introduces unacceptable risks to financial stability.

Those comments come as Qivalis, a consortium of 12 of Europe’s largest banks, including ING, BBVA, BNP Paribas, Danske Bank, and UniCredit, announced plans to launch a privately-issued digital euro, not a CBDC, later this year under the same premise that Europe faces dollarization risks.

“If we don’t have a euro onchain with depth of liquidity, then the only alternative is the U.S. dollar,” Qivalis CEO Jan-Oliver Sell told CoinDesk. “That’s a real risk to Europe’s financial and digital sovereignty.”

Lagarde reiterated warnings that stablecoins could create financial stability risks during periods of market stress. She referenced the March 2023 collapse of Silicon Valley Bank, when Circle disclosed that $3.3 billion of its $USDC reserves were at the bank, causing a brief de-peg of its stablecoin.
