Google study suggests quantum computers could crack crypto with fewer qubits than expected
Researchers at Google Quantum AI have published new findings indicating that the cryptography protecting major cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum could be vulnerable to quantum attacks using far fewer qubits than previously thought.
The study estimates that a practical quantum computer could break the 256-bit elliptic curve encryption (ECDLP-256) used by these blockchains with under 500,000 physical qubits, based on current hardware capabilities.
In tests on superconducting-qubit quantum computers relevant to cryptography, the team demonstrated a 20-fold reduction in qubits needed to derive a private key from a public key — the fundamental step securing most cryptocurrency accounts.
The paper also outlines a concerning scenario: a quantum attacker could theoretically recover a Bitcoin private key in about nine minutes, potentially enabling an “on-spend” attack within Bitcoin’s standard 10-minute block interval.
While practical quantum computers at this scale are not yet available, the research underscores the urgent need for quantum-resistant cryptography in the blockchain space.
