JPMorgan says Bitcoin is gaining on gold in debasement trade as ETF flows diverge
Bitcoin is taking market share from gold as investors hedge against fiat currency debasement, JPMorgan analysts said in a research note this week.

Bitcoin exchange-traded funds have recorded inflows for three consecutive months through May, while gold ETFs are still struggling to recover the outflows that followed the March Iran conflict, according to The Block.

As Cryptopolitan reported in March, the divergence began with Bitcoin gaining 11% during the early period of the Iran conflict, while gold fell about 5% and the S&P 500 dropped nearly 3%.

The May update extends that pattern. Gold’s failure to recover its February-March outflows is what’s making the structural shift visible.

Brad Garlinghouse Explains What CLARITY Act Means For Ripple and XRP

The CLARITY Act passing would be good for crypto and Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse believes that. Garlinghouse said Ripple has actively leaned into supporting the CLARITY Act.

“If we want the largest economy in the world, the United States, to lean into crypto in the way that helps, it’s good for Ripple if that happens,” he said. “But XRP has clarity.”

The distinction matters. Ripple is not lobbying for the CLARITY Act because it needs it. It is supporting it because the broader crypto industry does, and because a healthy US crypto regulatory environment is ultimately good for everyone operating in the space, including Ripple.

Garlinghouse also pointed to a concern he hears repeatedly from bank CEOs and senior financial executives. They are nervous. Not about XRP specifically, but about what happens when the current regulatory leadership changes. Paul Atkins is at the SEC today. But guidance is not law, and guidance can change the moment a new administration arrives.

“If you’re a big financial institution that’s had to deal with an SEC that has fined them billions of dollars, they don’t want to take a chance,” he said.

That institutional nervousness, Garlinghouse argued, is exactly why the CLARITY Act matters. Legislation creates permanence that guidance never can. Without it, major banks will remain cautious no matter how friendly today’s regulators appear.

The crypto industry’s embrace of AI is less about chatbots and more about building financial infrastructure for autonomous machines, says Chappy Asel, a former Apple engineer and founder of AI nonprofit The AI Collective.

Speaking at Consensus Miami, Asel, founder of The AI Collective, a global nonprofit AI community with more than 200,000 members across 150+ chapters, argued that as software agents increasingly make economic decisions on behalf of users and businesses, they will need payment systems capable of handling low-latency, programmable transactions at scale.

“When agents make the majority of financial decisions, economic decisions, how do they transact with each other?” Asel said during the panel. “You want them to be highly systematic, mechanistic. You want very small, micro transactions. You want very low latency.”

Asel, who previously worked on Apple’s Vision Pro and early Apple Intelligence efforts before launching The AI Collective, framed the convergence of crypto and AI through a practical lens.

“The number one thing that I've heard kind of throughout this conference... even my friends who only know about AI, they know nothing about blockchain, is they've heard about agentic payments,” he said.

Stablecoins already offer 24/7 settlement and smart contracts allow programmable execution. Marrying them together is the only logical way agentic payments — without a human in the middle — can become mainstream.

Still, the thesis remains early. AI agents are still nascent, and many companies today rely on centralized APIs and conventional payment systems. Attempts to build “agentic payments” infrastructure have so far generated little meaningful commercial activity, suggesting the narrative may be developing faster than actual demand.

Bitcoin slips to $79,000, DOGE leads majors losses as negative funding rates set 10-year record

The longer the funding rates stay red, the louder the short squeeze gets.

Bitcoin traded at $79,614 in Asian hours Friday, down 1.6% over 24 hours but still up 3.3% on the week, after pulling back from a Wednesday high of $81,500 that was the highest print since late January.

Ether dropped 2% to $2,278, dogecoin slid 3.8% to $0.1063, XRP fell 1.7% to $1.38, and BNB shed 0.7% to $638. Solana and TRON held in green territory at $88.14 and $0.3474 respectively. Dogecoin is the only major coin in the red on the seven-day tape.

The pullback came as U.S. forces fired on Iranian targets after attacks on American naval destroyers transiting the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday, per reports.

President Donald Trump described the strike as a "love tap" in an ABC News interview, said the ceasefire with Iran remains "in effect," and threatened to hit harder if Tehran does not sign a deal soon. Brent crude climbed 1.2% to around $101 a barrel on the escalation, though oil is still down more than 6% on the week as the broader US-Iran de-escalation narrative continues to hold.

Equities took a similar pause. The MSCI All Country World Index slipped 0.3% and Asian shares fell 1.2% from a record close, though the region is still on track for a fifth straight week of gains. Wall Street futures were 0.2% higher in early trading, suggesting the pullback is profit-taking rather than a structural reversal.

Bitcoin futures funding rates have now stayed negative for 67 consecutive days, the longest stretch in 10 years per K33 Research. Funding rates are periodic payments between traders holding long and short futures positions, with negative funding meaning shorts are paying longs to keep their positions open.

Benchmark calls Bitdeer 'comparatively inexpensive' as it reiterates $27 price target for BTDR shares

Bitdeer’s AI cloud ARR hit $43 million as of end-March, a 105% jump month-over-month, and management expressed strong demand from AI agents and enterprise workloads, Benchmark analysts said.

The firm represents a “comparatively inexpensive” hybrid bitcoin mining/AI-HPC stock, Benchmark said in Thursday’s note.

Benchmark Equity Research reiterated its "buy" rating and $27 price target on Bitdeer Technologies, citing the stock's re-rating potential as a bitcoin miner transitioning into AI/HPC infrastructure.

Bitdeer shares (BTDR) surged nearly 21% Wednesday following Hut 8's (HUT) announcement of a massive 352 MW AI data center deal at Beacon Point, highlighting investor enthusiasm for hybrid bitcoin mining/AI firms, the analysts led by Mark Palmer said in a note on Thursday.

With that in mind, BTDR trades at a "comparatively inexpensive" 4.5x forward EV/revenue despite possessing similar power access, vertical integration, and proprietary chip development capabilities.

Bitdeer’s AI cloud ARR hit $43 million as of end-March, a 105% jump month-over-month, and management expressed strong demand from AI agents and enterprise workloads, Benchmark said.

"In the burgeoning subsector of hybrid bitcoin mining/AI-HPC stocks, in which many of the most visible names have already 'mooned' on AI enthusiasm, BTDR remains comparatively inexpensive despite possessing some of the same foundational elements that investors are now aggressively rewarding elsewhere: large-scale power access, vertically integrated infrastructure, and increasingly sophisticated proprietary chip development capabilities," Benchmark wrote.

Notably, BTDR continues to advance its proprietary SEALMINER A4 mining chip roadmap, with a 69.5 EH/s self-mining hashrate in March.
