Crypto bulls positioned for a price rally have had their worst day in over three months as market leaders bitcoin and ether (ETH) declined on macro concerns.

In the past 24 hours, exchanges have liquidated $563 million in leveraged bullish bets in the futures market, the largest single-day wipeout since Feb. 6, when BTC crashed to nearly $60,000 and erased $1.84 billion in bullish positions, according to data source Coinglass.

Liquidations of shorts, or bearish bets, over the same period came in at just $65 million, which tells you how lopsided the positioning had become.

Demand continues to build at the fundamental level, but the probability of a rally remains slim. However, a key demand zone on the chart could lift price significantly if it holds.

Decoding Ethena’s monthly earnings
Ethena’s earnings have now reached the highest level since September 2025. According to its earnings report, which tracks profitability, Ethena generated about $605,000 in just the first seventeen days of this month.

Earnings data of this nature often signals that a protocol is performing positively and adds further incentive for investors to accumulate or maintain a long-term position in $ENA.That long-term view is already in motion, as reflected by the Total Value Locked (TVL).

TVL measures the total value of crypto assets deposited into a protocol’s smart contracts, spanning liquidity provision, lending, and yield generation. A rising TVL typically signals growing user confidence in the protocol and increasing demand for its products.

Notably, Ethena’s TVL has risen by about $998 million since the 23rd of April, reflecting growing investor confidence as more capital is deployed into the protocol and signaling belief in its near‑ to long‑term utility.

MN Fund founder Michaël van de Poppe was also bullish, saying on X Sunday that the current Bitcoin price action “doesn’t shout for new lows” but is “consolidating after a run of 40%.”

However, an important support level that is currently preventing a larger decline is the $76,000 area, he cautioned.

“If that level is lost, I would assume that the markets will see a further downward fall towards lower boundaries,” he said

Iran’s Ministry of Economy reportedly launched Hormuz Safe on May 16, 2026, targeting $10B in annual revenue.

Hormuz Safe will ostensibly settle maritime insurance policies in bitcoin, raising U.S. sanctions compliance concerns for cargo operators.

The platform covers Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz transits, with policy terms and war-damage exclusions still evolving.

The story started gathering virality on social media Sunday evening after 4 p.m. ET, with users sharing screenshots of the platform’s landing page at hormuzsafe.ir. Fars News Agency, an IRGC-affiliated Iranian state media outlet, published the originating report on May 16, 2026, citing a document obtained from the Ministry of Economy.

According to Fars News, the ministry had been pursuing the insurance plan since early Ordibehesht, the Persian calendar month that began in late April 2026. The platform reportedly issues fast, cryptographically verifiable insurance policies for maritime cargo passing through the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz, and surrounding waterways.

Payments are allegedly settled in bitcoin. Fars News states that from the moment of blockchain confirmation, cargo is covered, and a signed digital receipt is provided to the owner. The outlet frames the initiative as a sovereign Iranian tool for asserting financial control over one of the world’s most critical oil shipping chokepoints.

The Strait of Hormuz handles an estimated 20% of global oil trade. Iran has periodically threatened to close it during periods of heightened regional tension, and if the Hormuz Safe platform comes to fruition, it could give Tehran a financial mechanism to monetize passage rather than simply block it.
