The case, filed in Manhattan, could set a significant legal precedent for how courts treat centralized stablecoin issuers.

A Decades-Old Debt
The plaintiffs are survivors and family members of victims from Iran-linked terrorist attacks. They hold court judgments against Iran that were awarded years ago — judgments that have never been paid.

Now they are targeting a pile of frozen cryptocurrency as a way to collect what they are owed.

Attorney Charles Gerstein filed the lawsuit Thursday in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York.

His clients say they have a legal claim to two Tron blockchain wallet addresses holding roughly 344 million USDT. Those wallets were frozen earlier this year by the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control, which identified them as linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The plaintiffs are not asking Tether to simply release those specific wallets. According to reports, they want a court order directing Tether to transfer an equivalent amount of USDT to their legal team’s wallet address.


Why Tether Can Be Compelled
Unlike Bitcoin or Ethereum, USDT is controlled by a central company. Tether can freeze wallets, block transactions, and move funds when ordered to do so. That centralized structure is at the heart of Gerstein’s legal argument.

Because a prior order already froze the wallets — something only possible because Tether has direct operational control — he contends the company can also be ordered to move the funds.

Canaccord Wealth UK has partnered with Bitwise Asset Management to offer Bitcoin and Ethereum exchange-traded products to high-net-worth clients. The new service limits crypto exposure to 5% of client portfolios and keeps allocations inside a managed wealth structure.

Bradley Duke, Bitwise’s Head of Europe, disclosed the partnership in an X post. He said the arrangement gives selected Canaccord clients access to crypto products linked to the two largest digital assets.Through the deal, Canaccord becomes one of the first major UK wealth managers to add managed crypto exposure for affluent investors. This service targets high-net-worth clients, not the wider retail market.

The wealth manager oversees about $70 billion in assets, according to the provided details. A 5% allocation cap means Bitcoin and Ethereum would remain a limited part of client portfolios.

Under the partnership, Bitwise would provide ETP-based exposure to both assets. Such products allow clients to access crypto through a familiar investment structure rather than direct token ownership.

This approach keeps the rollout controlled. It also gives advisers a way to include digital assets without making crypto a dominant position in the portfolio.

Bitwise’s products are being used in an exchange-traded product wrapper. That structure could support crypto exposure within traditional investment channels used by wealth managers and professional advisers.

According to Chinese customs data, the largest buyer received over 790 tons in the first two months, including nearly 470 tons in February—the highest amount ever for that month.  Amid already low exchange reserves and overseas metal purchases due to strong demand, local prices have risen significantly above global benchmarks.

A wave of speculative buying from China and other countries drove silver prices up by roughly 70% at the beginning of the year, but by the end of January, they abruptly gave up their gains. This was the most volatile start to a year for silver prices.

The robust import numbers indicate that, despite changes in trade flows, physical consumption in China has continued. Demand has come from solar manufacturers front-loading production and retail investors hoarding silver bars as an alternative to increasingly expensive gold.

Chinese trade policy is another source of stress for the world silver market. China has approved 44 companies to export silver in 2026 and 2027, according to a December Reuters report.

According to Oleg Ogienko, an executive at the stablecoin, the business survives. Like its dollar and euro-pegged equivalents, the ruble token provides faster, cheaper international settlement than traditional banking payments, he said, and, like them, will find wider applications as international commerce opens up.
“Our stablecoin has a good chance to stay competitive even after the sanctions are lifted,” Ogienko told CoinDesk in Hong Kong. “If you trade with Russia, you need convenient and fast means of settlement.”
