Animoca Brands received a Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) license from the Dubai Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA), which marks an important regulatory step that allows the company to offer legal virtual asset brokerage, management, and investment services.

Hong Kong–based company, Animoca Brands, which specializes in blockchain gaming and other Web3 technologies had gained a VASP licence. With that, now able to provide investing and broker-dealer services in Dubai, except the Dubai International Financial Center. Additionally, it enables the company to operate within a regulated framework with qualified and institutional investors.

VARA License Strengthens Regional Presence

The announcement was released on February 16, where Omar Elassar, managing director for the Middle East and head of Global Strategic Partnerships at Animoca Brands, said: “Receiving the VASP licence from VARA is an important milestone for Animoca Brands’ operations, particularly in Dubai and the Middle East.”

Further, he added, “This licence enhances our ability to engage with Web3 foundations as well as global institutional and qualified investors within a well-regulated framework, and reflects our commitment to building and operating responsibly as digital asset markets continue to mature.”

The license complies with the January 2026 Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA) revision of the framework governing the Dubai International Financial Center, as it banned privacy-focused cryptos and tightened the stablecoin rules, which underscores the importance of operating within a well-regulated digital asset environment.

Willy Woo Warns: Quantum Risk Threatens Bitcoin's Advantage Over Gold




This warning comes as quantum computing gradually moves from a niche area into a mainstream risk factor in institutional portfolios.


On-chain analyst Willy Woo stated that the market has begun pricing in the quantum threat, casting doubt on the loss of 4 million Bitcoins and Bitcoin's 12-year valuation increase relative to gold.


In a post published on the X Forum on Monday, Woo pointed out that the market has begun pricing in the risk of a future "Q Day" breakthrough. A "Q Day" refers to the emergence of a sufficiently powerful quantum computer capable of breaking current public-key cryptography. If a powerful quantum computer can derive the private key from a leaked public key, approximately 4 million lost Bitcoins could be reactivated, undermining part of Bitcoin's core scarcity narrative.


He estimates there is about a 25% chance the Bitcoin network will freeze these Bitcoins through a hard fork, one of the most contentious issues in Bitcoin governance.  According to blockchain researchers, these 4 million exposed Bitcoins represent approximately 25% to 30% of the total Bitcoin supply, stored in addresses whose public keys are publicly available on the blockchain.


Any move to freeze these Bitcoins would overturn long-standing norms regarding fungibility, immutability, and property rights. Freezing these Bitcoins could trigger a significant divide between those prioritizing backward-compatible fixes and those willing to rewrite the rules to protect earlier balances.


Woo states that given the 75% probability that these Bitcoins will remain unchanged, investors should assume a substantial likelihood that the equivalent of eight years' worth of Bitcoin accumulated by a business will be available again. This probability has already been factored into the structural discount Bitcoin's valuation relative to gold over the next 5 to 15 years.
