The CFTC’s latest Commitments of Traders report, covering the week ended May 5th, paints a picture of traditional finance positioning that crypto investors should pay attention to, even if digital assets didn’t make the guest list. Equity fund managers grew more bullish on the S&P 500, speculators dialed back their bets against Treasuries, and currency markets looked like a coin flip.
What the positioning data actually shows
The COT report is the CFTC’s weekly snapshot of how different categories of traders, managed money, commercial hedgers, and speculators, are positioned across futures and options markets.
This week’s data revealed equity fund managers increasing their net long positions in S&P 500 futures. On the fixed income side, speculators reduced their short positions in Treasury futures. Currency futures positioning was mixed, with no clear directional consensus emerging across major pairs.

We’re almost halfway through Q2, and the cycle is already exhibiting some clear divergences.

The main standout is Cardano [$ADA]. $ADA is up over 13% so far this quarter, even outperforming Ethereum [$ETH], pushing the $ADA/$ETH ratio up 4% – Its strongest quarterly performance since the Q1 2025 cycle. For a chain often labeled a “ghost chain,” Cardano’s price action is starting to look more convincing.

Notably, across major exchanges, $ADA positioning is leaning clearly bullish, with traders steadily shifting into long exposure in line with the broader technical setup. Still, given $ADA’s history of sharp reversals and volatile swings, the question now is –

Is this the early phase of a sustained breakout, or just another liquidity-driven move that fades into a bull trap once momentum cools off?

After $SEI’s aggressive expansion toward the $0.0694 resistance, momentum gradually shifted into a controlled retracement phase. Price initially faced sharp rejection near $0.0694 before retracing toward the 38.2% Fibonacci support around $0.0657.This zone now acts as the market’s immediate strength test because strong bullish structures usually defend shallow pullbacks quickly.

If buyers maintain control above $0.0657, momentum may rebuild toward another retest of the $0.0694 high. A successful breakout there could expose it toward the psychological $0.080 region.

Meanwhile, RSI cooled toward 55.85 after previously entering overbought territory above 70, helping reset momentum conditions. CMF also remained positive near 0.12, signaling capital still flows into the token despite profit-taking pressure.

However, losing the $0.0634 support may expose the token toward the $0.060 region again.

On-chain data also showed larger holders adding exposure before and during the rally. Santiment data showed wallets holding 1 million to 10 million $ONDO increased their combined balance from 555.38 million to 594.05 million over the past month.
